Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up yet again — this time for a thrilling Netflix crime drama helmed by writer and director Joe Carnahan (The A-Team). In The Rip, the longtime pals will play Miami cops, Lt. Dane Dumars (Damon) and Det Sgt. JD Byrne (Affleck), whose lives take a dramatic turn when their team discovers a stash of millions of dollars in a drug den.
“As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on,” the official synopsis reads.
Other key cast members include Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Teyana Taylor (Coming 2 America), Sasha Calle (The Flash), Scott Adkins (John Wick: Chapter 4), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (Barbarians).
“The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department. It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era.” – Joe Carnahan
Although we are still four months away from the release of The Rip, Netflix has released some new stills, which you can check out below.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Have Their Partnership Down to a Fine Art
Growing up in the same neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Damon and Affleck became friends in kindergarten and their friendship continued into their professional lives as they both pursued careers in the entertainment industry. They’ve now worked together in film for more than 30 years, whether it was getting a gig as uncredited extras in Field of Dreams in 1989, co-writing Good Will Hunting, or starring side-by-side in movies like Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Air. In 2022, they even formed their own production company, Artists Equity.
“I was like, what are we doing, man? Both of us, this is what we love to do more than anything,” Damon told Deadline in November 2024, while discussing their decision to start the company. “The only thing better is doing it together, in any capacity, whether he’s directing or whether we’re acting together or whether we’re producing together, or whether we’re just facilitating for other filmmakers.”
Their hard work has paid off. As decades passed, they’ve honed their shared skills and gotten their partnership down to a science. In an interview with Tudum, Carnahan revealed that he’d “never had as easy an experience on a movie” as he did when shooting The Rip with Damon and Affleck.
“Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds… They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.” – Joe Carnahan
The Rip will be released on Netflix on Jan. 16, 2026.
