Five Nights at Freddy’s fans had been hoping that the sequel to Blumhouse’s 2023 creepy hit would be pushing more boundaries and upping the gore and horror, but it seems that disappointing times are ahead after Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has officially received the same PG-13 rating as its predecessor.

According to FlimRatings.com, the movie will not only carry the same “family horror” rating as the 2021 hit, but the warnings that come with the certificate have been dumbed down a little, suggesting that the sequel could even be tamer. The original movie was given the rating for “strong violent content, bloody images, and language.” The sequel’s warning only lists “violent content, terror, and some language.”

This would probably not have been anything unexpected if it had not been for Jason Blum speaking at CCXP in June and promising that the new movie would be addressing the biggest criticism of the panned 2021 hit. Blum said:

“We took lots of criticism, saying it was not scary, lacked blood or strong scenes. We decided to implement all that in the sequel.”

Now, fans are questioning whether this will be the case with the sequel, or whether the expectation of an escalation is going to lead to disappointment.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ 2 Can Still Satisfy Fans

Universal Pictures

There are many horror lovers that believe if a movie does not secure an R-rating, then it cannot possibly deliver a full suite of bloody gore and terror that they demand. Yet, that could not be further from the truth. A PG-13 rating may not be able to feature the kind of sadistic and prolonged bloodlust of the Terrifier movies, but it can be psychologically disturbing and push its violence to quite a high level as long as things don’t get too graphic around the results of that violence.

So, can Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 outperform its predecessor and deliver an upgraded set of reviews to boot? Only time will tell, but the first movie was much better received by audiences than critics, and that is the thing that pays the bills at the end of the day. Star Josh Hutcherson certainly felt that the new movie will “open up” the world created in the first movie. He told Esquire:

“It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher. There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way. We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 stars Hutcherson along with fellow returnee Matthew Lillard and his former Scream costar Skeet Ulrich, who joins the cast for the sequel in an undisclosed role. The movie will debut in cinemas on December 5, 2025, and if it proves to be a fearful festive hit as many predict it will, then it is likely that this will not be the last installment of the franchise to make it to the big screen.
