Scary Movie 6 will see the return of the Wayans brothers, the creative trio behind the horror parody franchise created in the year 2000. While the project remains under wraps, it has been announced that the sequel will also feature the return of stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall. As the Wayans develop a modern Scary Movie, Marlon has shared which modern horror films could be parodied in the highly anticipated sequel to be released in June 2026. If you find yourself offended when someone makes fun of your favorite horror movie, you will probably not like where this is going.

Marlon Wayans, a.k.a. Shorty Meeks in the original Scary Movies, is currently promoting his appearance in Him, the Jordan Peele-produced sports horror movie that will be released on September 19. Scary Movie 6 is Wayans’ next big project, as it will see his reunion with siblings Keenen Ivory and Shawn. They’re teaming up to write the script for the sequel, and Wayans had this to say to ComicBook.com about which films fans should expect to be parodied:

“I mean, you know, I’m just a fan of the whole genre, man. I Know What You Did Last Summer may have something in there. I think the Scream franchise is always a great one. I think Heretic was a wonderful film. Longlegs. Get Out. Nope. There are just so many great horror films to pull from that we plan on having a field day. Sinners.”

There are plenty of horror movies that Scary Movie 6 could parody. If the Wayans take into account the previous 25 years of horror history, the catalog is huge. From properties like It and The Conjuring to “elevated” horror picks like The Witch and Hereditary, the writers behind the movie have a buffet of horror movies they can choose to spoof. Hopefully, they’ll do so and survive in the process.

Can ‘Scary Movie 6’ Win Over Today’s Audience?

Dimension Films

Regardless of the different creative directions taken in the previous entries, audiences haven’t seen a Scary Movie in more than a decade. 2013 saw the release of Scary Movie 5, but it failed to leave a mark. It was certainly not as successful as the first four, which made over $100 million at the box office, with the first entry grossing a whopping $278 million in 2000.

Trying to capture the spirit of the original movies will be a challenge that the Wayans will surely face. Audiences have evolved, and though some jokes are still funny, there are others that will probably be tweaked. Stoner comedy doesn’t have the impact it once had, and Scary Movie 6 will probably have to follow a more culturally sensitive tone. However, the Wayans do have nostalgia within their reach, and they will “weaponize” it.

It’s been 25 years since the first film was released, and the franchise does have fans, but success can’t solely depend on the older audience members. Scary Movie 6 will have to win over today’s audience, which has been treated to a different palette of modern horror movies.
