If there’s one thing Netflix loves to do, it’s tug on the heartstrings of its audience, and the latest streaming craze stirring up emotions is the romantic drama A Thousand Tomorrows. The six-episode miniseries is based on the Karen Kingsbury novel of the same name and chronicles the blossoming relationship between renowned bull rider Cody Gunner and gusty barrel racer Ali Daniels as they find their worlds colliding amid their own personal struggles and ambitions.
Originally produced for Great American Pure Flix, the faith-based drama explores themes like love, hope, resilience, and the importance of family and features Colin Ford and Ali Daniels as star-crossed lovers. Netflix just recently added A Thousand Tomorrows to its ever-growing catalog, and the series is already making its way up the Top 10 TV Shows list and currently sits in the number 6 spot. Those looking for some wholesome romance with their Western need not look further than the touching drama, which is just begging to be binged.
‘A Thousand Tomorrows’ Is a Wholesome & Sweet Romantic Western
In the sweeping romantic drama A Thousand Tomorrows, Colin Ford (Under the Dome) stars as cocky, competitive bull rider Cody Gunner, a legend amongst his peers who lives and breathes the rodeo life and does not have room for anyone in his heart other than his disabled younger brother. Sparks fly when Cody meets the feisty Ali Daniels (Finding You‘s Rose Reid), a gifted barrel racer who is secretly dealing with a respiratory issue that could make any day her last, but she is determined to risk it all to pursue her passion. As the pair falls in love, their profound connection forces them to find a balance when it comes to their competitive nature and personal faith.
A Thousand Tomorrows features the additional talents of stars like Kate Easton, K.C. Clyde, and Ck Bolado, with the endearing show being based on the first novel of Karen Kingsbury’s Cody Gunner book series. Kingsbury herself played a hand in adapting the drama for television and both wrote and executive-produced the series alongside Tyler Russell, who also helped bring the author’s novels Someone Like You and the upcoming The Christmas Ring to the big screen.
The sweet and simple premise of the touching series is reminiscent of fellow shows like When Hope Calls, Ransom Canyon, and Heartland, and it is also perfect for fans of the Taylor Sheridan juggernaut Yellowstone who were craving more breathtaking romance and tender moments from the TV knockout. Set in the exciting world of professional bull riding, A Thousand Tomorrows also shines a light on cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition affecting the lungs that Reid’s character, Ali Daniels, is fighting, and a secret Cody discovers as he falls in love with the courageous barrel racer.
Netflix Has Another Streaming Hit with ‘A Thousand Tomorrows’
Prior to its arrival on Netflix, A Thousand Tomorrows garnered rave reviews from fans of romantic Westerns, the original novel, and faith-based dramas, with the series earning a stellar 7.3/10 IMDb rating from users with one person writing on the site, “It is a beautifully written love story about two young people on the rodeo circuit”, before further adding, “All of the acting is good and convincing, but the chemistry between Ali and Cody makes the show.”
Similar to fellow cozy shows like Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias, A Thousand Tomorrows is a wholesome series that can be enjoyed by the entire family and will leave you feeling uplifted and introspective as you watch Ali continue to pursue her dreams despite her illness while also letting her guard down and pursuing a romance with Cody. In an interview with The Direct in 2023, Kingsbury revealed that the novel and subsequent TV adaptation were one of her favorite stories she’s ever written, saying of the thought-provoking premise:
“And so of course, a girl with cystic fibrosis who would be a barrel racer would mean that she was embracing life, knowing it would be less than a number of days in the quality of what I was calling her to do. So, there’s the angry bull rider who had some issues with his dad and the sick barrel racer. It became this love story that became one of my favorite ones I’ve ever written about.”
Fans of A Thousand Tomorrows will be happy to learn that after two years of uncertainty from viewers, Kingsbury hinted that a second season of the series could be in the works at Netflix in an Instagram post from September 2025, and that the follow-up installment would be based on the second novel, Just Beyond the Clouds. Seeing as the romantic drama is steadily climbing the ranks in the streaming giant’s Top 10 TV shows list (it previously cracked the top five) and is now reaching new audiences, it is very likely that a sophomore season will be greenlit if it continues to perform well on the platform.
