Nicole Kidman‘s highly anticipated legacy sequel has received a magical update, and it’s one that might call for midnight margaritas. The Oscar winner took to Instagram on Saturday to announce that Practical Magic 2 has wrapped production ahead of its release in theaters next year, which comes 28 years after the original ’90s fantasy feature. Kidman starred in the first film as Gillian “Gilly” Owens, the free-spirited sister of Sandra Bullock‘s Sally Owens — and both actresses reunited in July to start filming the long-awaited follow-up.
Kidman posted a behind-the-scenes video to her Instagram grid (shared below) to report the exciting news about the Practical Magic sequel. The short clip shows Kidman and Bullock walking away from the camera, arm in arm, across a meadow at golden hour. The two break away from each other but keep holding hands to do a “profile shot,” which prompts Kidman to burst into laughter and embrace her co-star. “That’s a wrap on Practical Magic 2,” Kidman confirmed in the caption. “Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic.”
The video doesn’t give too much away, but it’s enough to stir up excitement among fans of the 1998 film. The two stars look to be dressed in their witchy best, ready to cast spells, brew potions, and mount their brooms for another bewitching chapter. This time, the story will draw inspiration from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic, a sequel to the original book adapted for the first film, which sees three generations of Owens woman, including Bullock’s daughters – one of whom will be played by a longtime Netflix star – and a long-lost brother, set out on a globetrotting mission, traveling to the bustling city of London, the quaint streets of Paris, and the serene English countryside, in an attempt to break a centuries-old curse.
Who Is in the Cast Coven for ‘Practical Magic 2’?
Practical Magic 2 is set to hit theaters on Sept. 18, 2026, just in time for spooky season. Kidman and Bullock are returning alongside original cast members Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, the matriarchs who took Sally and Gillian into their care after their parents died. Meanwhile, Evan Rachel Wood, who played Sally’s eldest daughter Kylie in the original film, was not invited back for the sequel and was told by Warner Bros. that her character would instead be recast. Alexandra Artrip, the actress who portrayed Kylie’s younger sister Antonia, has since retired from the spotlight, so she will not be back.
Newcomers to the Practical Magic 2 cast coven include Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Lee Pace (Foundation), Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle), and Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt), but their roles are being kept under wraps. The Kissing Booth star Joey King is also part of the ensemble, but she is expected to play one of Bullock’s two daughters, more than likely Kylie, who is pivotal in the book on which the film is based. She will apparently discover her family’s dark secrets and her own powers, plunging her loved ones into crisis.
Susanne Bier has directed Practical Magic 2 from a screenplay by Georgia Pritchett and Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the script for the first installment in the saga. Bullock and Kidman are producing the sequel along with Denise Di Novi, who served in the same role on the original film, but fans won’t discover what they have conjured up until September next year when the Owens family officially return to the big screen.
