As fans await more details regarding the anticipated sequel to The Batman, Matt Reeves has shared a mysterious comment about the film’s villain. The Batman – Part II is set to bring back Gotham’s Dark Knight to fight crime once again, but the superhero’s antagonist remains unconfirmed. While viewers make their bets, Reeves says that the sequel will feature a villain that’s “never been done in a film before.” The plot thickens.

As reported by Variety, the director recently talked to Josh Horowitz, the host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, who usually manages to pull precious information from celebrities. Horowitz first congratulates Reeves on the success of the miniseries The Penguin, and on finishing a script for The Batman – Part II. Of course, the key questions about the sequel’s direction and characters don’t take long to arrive.

After Horowitz tries his best to get something out of the writer/director about how he figured out the villain for the sequel, he replies with a smirk and says, “Oh, I can’t tell you that.” When asked how he picked the proper antagonist from Batman’s iconic rogues gallery, Reeves was kind enough to respond:

“Well, it’s funny because I had a lot of ideas and then Mattson Tomlin, who’s my writing partner, we began the process of this by doing another deep dive into the comics, exploring the ideas that I had. He gave me some ideas that he had had and we sat together and we watched a lot of movies honestly, and not all movies that are from the realm of Gotham.”

After explaining his plans to tell a story about Bruce Wayne, and not exclusively Batman, Reeves said that the process of picking the villain was actually in tune with this: “Picking the right villain that digs into what that does, and sort of goes into [Bruce’s] past and his life, that was what drove that discussion. I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it.” Reeves then teased that what they came up with has “never really been done in a movie before.”

‘The Batman – Part II’: Everything We Know So Far

The 2022 reboot was a hugely successful film for Warner Bros., grossing over $772 million. A sequel was a no-brainer, but there were a few bumps along the way. The new DCU was created, and the DC Elseworlds label’s development – which The Batman is part of – had to continue in parallel. Eventually, Matt Reeves was able to finish a script, and now The Batman – Part II is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. The film will see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

For obvious reasons, the secretive project is being protected against nosy fans wanting to leak stuff onto the internet. Reeves recently said that, in order to keep the script details a secret, he had to resort to a tool that’s more analog than any digital security system: “We put [the script] into a secret pouch that literally has a lock on it with a code.”
