Critical reception and awards have never been a barometer for quality. The history of television and film is full of entries that either went unnoticed or were met with less-than-stellar reviews. However, every so often, something comes along that receives accolades and awards that are well-deserved. At this year’s Emmys, The Pitt racked up an impressive 13 nominations and took home three. The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series, actor Noah Wyle won his very first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Katherine LaNasa won for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
Not to brag, but the success of The Pitt at The Emmys is something we had a strong feeling about when the show debuted earlier this year.
How ‘The Pitt’ Shifted the Paradigm
Medical dramas are nothing new; they’ve been a staple of television programming for several decades. However, The Pitt opted for a different style that shifted the paradigm for the better. Many medical dramas rely on an episodic formula of storytelling, relying on the typical three-act structure that many audiences are familiar with. A patient’s case would be dealt with over multiple days, with several intertwining subplots involving characters accompanying each episode.
The Pitt contains patients, their cases, and the multiple personalities involved in a hospital setting. However, rather than drawing out scenarios that would span multiple days in a single episode, The Pitt opted for a format not seen for quite some time. Similar to 24, the events in The Pitt occur in real time, with each episode focusing on one hour in the emergency room at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
The Pitt, with its heightened sense of frenetic realism, has not only gained notoriety with critics and audiences but also with medical professionals. In an interview conducted by Vulture, Dr. Lukas Ramcharran, who works at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, praised the show for depicting a typical day working in a trauma center.
I really like the format. The idea of one shift is good at showing what a day in the life is like and different push-and-pulls in the role. You have the medicine, but you also have all these other non-medicine things that pull at your attention: your team members, your hospital, the trials and tribulations of working with people who come to you on their worst day.
The bold way The Pitt depicts a typical workday in a trauma center elevates the medical drama. Audiences grasp the unrelenting pace at which medical professionals work and how unpredictable one hour can be. It’s no surprise that The Pitt took home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. We all knew we were watching something unique when it first debuted.
Long Overdue Recognition
With Noah Wyle’s lead role on The Pitt as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, many began to refer to the show as the “spiritual successor to ER“ even before the first episode hit streaming. Wyle, who portrayed John Carter on ER for 254 episodes, was somewhat overshadowed by George Clooney, who achieved notable success following his departure.
Wyle, who has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Donnie Darko and Pirates of Silicon Valley, has received long-overdue recognition with his Emmy win for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. For an actor whose public perception has been limited to his stint on ER, Wyle has now made a name for himself as the lead in a medical drama series that surpasses his previous role.
For those of us who watched Wyle on The Pitt, we sat back in awe at the actor’s passionate performance in each episode. Not once did we have to suspend disbelief or think to ourselves that this was “the guy from ER.” We all collectively knew that this was Wyle’s finest hour. After The Pitt‘s finale, MovieWeb‘s own Amanda Rozenboom said the Emmys “should go ahead and engrave Noah Wyle’s statue right now.”
As Wyle received his Emmy, he also took the time to acknowledge the efforts of not just those who worked alongside him on The Pitt but also the selfless men and women who work in real-life trauma centers across the country. “To anybody who is going on shift tonight or who is coming off shift tonight, this one is for you.”
After The Pitt‘s three Emmy Award wins, it’s currently streaming on Max.
