The chaotic state of affairs surrounding the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has been dominating headlines for two days now, but the fallout surrounding the decision to pull Kimmel’s show off-air for his comments relating to the death of Charlie Kirk has now even made it to a galaxy far, far away – as it appears to have impacted the release of the first trailer for Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
It was previously hinted that the trailer for the Pedro Pascal-led film would be arriving this week, and several online sources have now claimed that the first look at the highly anticipated 2026 release was meant to go live on Thursday. However, the uproar over ABC’s pulling of Jimmy Kimmel Live! reportedly led Disney to postpone dropping the trailer as they were worried it would be bombarded with comments from those who have taken umbrage with the House of Mouse in the last couple of days.
Star Wars-centric accounts on X and Instagram had been prepping for the arrival of the trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, but were disappointed when it failed to materialize. Obviously, the movie is not being released until next summer, so a short delay in the trailer’s worldwide release is neither here nor there, but, if true, it does suggest that Disney is aware of exactly how badly Kimmel’s cancellation has been received.
Has Jimmy Kimmel’s Cancellation Really Impacted ‘Star Wars’?
Why would drama over a late-night chat show host stall a Star Wars promotion? In simple terms, The Mandalorian and Grogu is the biggest release in the franchise for several years, particularly as it is the movie that will bring Star Wars back to cinemas for the first time since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
Disney wants to make sure that everything about The Mandalorian and Grogu runs as smoothly as possible, and that includes getting a strong response to the first public trailer for the movie. However, dropping a trailer that will rack up tens of millions of views in the current climate would likely result in comments sections being filled with targeted barbs linked to Kimmel’s current state of suspension.
In the grand scheme of things, The Mandalorian a Grogu is not going to be impacted at all by whatever happens with Kimmel when all of this is said and done. However, from a PR point of view, the idea of one of the biggest Disney trailers dropping at a time when several celebrities are calling for a boycott of everything linked to the company, the whole thing is a nightmare. It appears that this means Star Wars fans will need to wait a little longer to get their first look at The Mandalorian a Grogu, but when exactly that will be is still unknown.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is due to be released on May 22, 2026, and is directed by Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau. The film will be the first of a new wave of Star Wars movies, which will include Shawn Levy’s Starfighter in 2027, James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi movie, Daisy Ridley’s return in a Rey Skywalker/New Jedi Order movie, and several other projects that are in various stages of development.
