The cast and crew for Dexter: Original Sin have gone through a roller-coaster of emotions over the past few months — and show creator Clyde Phillips is far from pleased. Original Sin — which explored the young lives of Dexter and Debra Morgan — premiered in December 2024 and was renewed for a second season in April. However, only a few months after they got the good news, their excitement was snatched back when Paramount+ canceled the show in August.
On the Tuesday, Sept. 16, installment of the “Dissecting Dexter” podcast, Phillips admitted that the phone call that informed him the show had been dropped was a “tough” one to get.
“I had informed all the writers and actors, and then they unpicked it up. All while picking up Resurrection, which was no surprise. It wasn’t handled well and I’m not happy about it.”
Following the cancellation, several of the cast members also spoke out about the controversial decision. Alex Shimizu, who played the young version of Vince Mazuka, said it was “tough to explain” how “rare and extraordinary” the show had been for him.
“While I’m devastated, the amazing memories and experiences I had will always have a place in my heart,” he continued in an Instagram statement shared on Aug. 22. “Paddy Gibson was a phenomenal leader who set such a great tone for our show. This was definitely a special group of people. Thank you to everyone who supported us. RIP Young Masuka and the Season 2 TikToks.”
Meanwhile, young Debra actress Molly Brown penned, “Over n out ✌️ I had the absolute time of my life getting to be Deb even just for a little bit.”
Jasper Lewis, who starred as Dexter’s adoptive mother, Doris Morgan, said she was “so sad” to see the show end, but also “lucky to have gone on the journey,” per Dexter Daily.
“It was such an honor and a privilege to be Doris Morgan. People don’t know this, but she was a total baddie with an attitude and I wish we had gotten to explore that part of her. RIP girl. Thank you to everyone who watched and loved the show!”
‘Dexter: Resurrection’s Fate No Longer Hangs in the Balance
While Original Sin got the ax, another successful Dexter spin-off is scheduled to start production in the near future. Phillips also confirmed on the podcast that their writer’s room for Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection is opening on Oct. 6, and they are expecting to “write through the holidays” until some time in early Spring 2026.
“And then start what we call ‘soft prep,’ meaning start planning the stages, and the sets … locations, and then begin the casting process and take it from there.”
Despite Dexter continuing in other forms, it seems that another planned spinoff focusing on the series’ iconic Trinity Killer (played by Jon Lithgow in the original series) has also quietly been abandoned.
