John Wick scene-stealer and still the most underrated action star currently in the game, Scott Adkins, takes the lead in this year’s World War II martial arts mash-up, which reviews are now calling one of the actor’s best. The war action epic has now landed a solid score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a whole host of promising reactions, with the movie cementing itself as one that genre fans need to check out. Which is fortunate, as it’s now available via VOD.
Led by Scott Adkins, who saw his star rise at last after appearing alongside Keanu Reeves in 2023’s action movie masterpiece John Wick: Chapter 4, Prisoner of War is directed by Adkins’ Debt Collector co-star Louis Mandylor. The action outing has now landed a score of 70% from critics (which is impressive considering its unashamed B-movie stylings), with Harris Dang of Their Own League awarding Prisoner of War a near-perfect 4/5 and concluding…
“Prisoner of War stands out as one of Adkins’ best due to its emotional sincerity in its formula narrative, powerful fight scenes and effective performances.”
The praise continues courtesy of Sebastian Zavala Kahn of Loud and Clear Reviews, who said, “It ended up pleasantly surprising me. […] It’s the perfect kind of vehicle for Adkins, who, by now, should be appearing in more big-budget productions.” While Dallas King of Flick Feast applauded Prisoner of War for being “a testament to the strength and honour of the men who fought in those conflicts” as well as delivering “brutality and entertainment in equal measure.”
Scott Adkins Continues to Fight the Good Fight for No-Nonsense Action Glory
Prisoner of War features an all-star international cast alongside Scott Adkins, including Michael Copon (As Good as Dead, Power Rangers: Time Force), Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (3 Days in Malay, The Equalizer 2), Michael Rene Walton (Reptile), Gary Cairns (The Channel, Justified), Shane Kosugi (Nine Deaths of the Ninja), Masanori Mimoto (Baby Assassins, Hydra), Gabbi Garcia (Unbreak My Heart), and Peter Shinkoda (I, Robot, Daredevil). You can check out the official synopsis for Prisoner of War below…
“Starring martial arts icon Scott Adkins as British SAS officer James Wright, Prisoner of War tells the story of a soldier captured by the Japanese and held in a Philippine POW camp. Before the entire colony embarks upon the Bataan Death March, Wright and his fellow prisoners are forced to compete in brutal death matches for the entertainment of their captors. Adkins puts in a career-best performance as the man who may be able to save them all.”
Following the release of Prisoner of War, which is now available on VOD and is due to hit DVD, Blu-ray, and digital on November 10, Scott Adkins has plenty of crowd-pleasing action fare in the pipeline. The actor and martial artist will join forces with The Raid star Iko Uwais for Skyline: Warpath, do battle alongside Gladiator and Blood Diamond star Djimon Hounsou in the martial arts thriller One Last Fight, embark on a mission to save his kidnapped sister in Bedlam, and star alongside Oscar-winners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the Netflix crime thriller outing The Rip.
