Quentin Tarantino‘s filmography might be one of the most acclaimed and celebrated of all time, but that still doesn’t stop fans from favoring certain films, leaving others in the dust. Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Inglourious Basterds, and Django: Unchained might be his most celebrated, but it’s one of Tarantino’s more underrated films that fans need to check out when it arrives on free streaming next month. We might never get to see Tarantino’s interpretation of the sci-fi genre with his once-rumored Star Trek movie, but we’ve already seen him, at least star in, a unique take on the dark fantasy genre, and it’s every bit as Tarantino-esque as you’d expect.
From Dusk Till Dawn will soon stream for free on Tubi. Robert Rodriguez’s vampire-filled action film will arrive on Tubi on October 1. Released in 1996, From Dusk Till Dawn might not be Tarantino’s most successful or acclaimed movie, but it gave the actor far more screen time than any film before, and he proved himself to be a decent talent in front of the camera. Much like Tarantino’s own Death Proof, From Dusk Till Dawn often gets overlooked when people discuss his movies, but, with its upcoming arrival on free streaming, things could be about to change.
From Dusk Till Dawn starred George Clooney and Tarantino as Seth and Richard Gecko, two brothers on the run from the police who find themselves hiding in a small Southwestern town. But the inhabitants of the town turn out to be far more sinister than the brothers themselves. The official synopsis reads:
“On the run from a bank robbery that left several police officers dead, Seth Gecko (George Clooney) and his paranoid, loose-cannon brother, Richard (Quentin Tarantino), hightail it to the Mexican border. Kidnapping preacher Jacob Fuller (Harvey Keitel) and his kids, the criminals sneak across the border in the family’s RV and hole up in a topless bar. Unfortunately, the bar also happens to be home base for a gang of vampires, and the brothers and their hostages have to fight their way out.”
‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ Is a Whole Bloody Affair
Even though he didn’t direct the movie, From Dusk Till Dawn still has all the usual Tarantino-isms, including lots of blood, sharp dialogue, over-the-top action, beautiful camera work, and a worrying amount of feet (this time, they’re literally shoved in Tarantino’s face). From Dusk Till Dawn has all of the above in spades, and it does so under the guise of a dark fantasy film. It might not take you off to a distant land or feature a complex magic system, but From Dusk Till Dawn is about as close as we’ll get to Tarantino taking on a high fantasy story.
From Dusk Till Dawn was a decent hit when it was released in ’96. Coming off the back of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown‘s success, From Dusk Till Dawn grossed just shy of $60 million worldwide. That might not sound like a lot, but for a film that was shot on a budget of just $19 million, it’s still a roaring success. From Dusk Till Dawn found even greater success with video rentals and DVD sales. The film also holds a decent Rotten Tomatoes score of 66%. Although audiences enjoyed the film a lot more, calling it “criminally underrated” and an “action masterpiece” while rating it 76%.
