As Horror Inc., the company behind the Jason Universe, continues to draw the roadmap for the future of the Friday the 13th franchise, an unexpected figure has teased his portrayal of the iconic Jason Voorhees. Retired wrestler Adam Scherr, best known for his WWE name Braun Strowman, has revealed that he could be the next one to give life to the machete master on a perpetual rampage to kill campers.
As reported by Collider, Scherr was at Fantastic Fest 2025 to promote his next movie, Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon. The former wrestler took the time to answer some questions, and when asked about which horror franchise he would like to participate in, Scherr simply said, “Oh, Friday the 13th. Jason.” Not only that, but Scherr actually teased that he may already be in talks to play the revengeful slasher in the next iteration of the Jason Universe:
“There may be some talks about it with people that I know and my agency. If we could ever get everybody to get back on the same page and allow the things to work, I might be the next Voorhees.”
What’s Next in the ‘Friday the 13th’ Franchise?
The current status of the Friday the 13th universe is so complicated that discussing it without error is nearly impossible. What started as a simple slasher franchise has evolved into a shapeless creature made up of different visions and directions. All because of a legal fight over rights that ended up in something incomprehensible for many. Because of this, the best thing we can do is look ahead and imagine what the future of Friday the 13th looks like. That is, if there is anything such as “Friday the 13th” in the future.
The surviving creature of more than a decade of legal squabbling is the Jason Universe, which is apparently a relaunch of the official brand of Jason Voorhees. Keep in mind that this could mean the end of Friday the 13th as we know it, because the original creators couldn’t agree on a mutually profitable arrangement. Horror is generational, of course, but the Jason Universe feels like a clunky attempt at selling an uninspired product. Friday the 13th was a movie franchise, but the Jason Universe feels more like a brand.
As to what’s next for the Friday the 13th franchise, or Jason Voorhees for that matter, Peacock and A24 have teamed up for the official prequel Crystal Lake. The TV series will follow the events prior to the 1980 movie, which means that in its timeline, Jason is still decades away from becoming a slasher killer. The prequel focuses on Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s traumatic death when he was a boy, and the carnage that followed.
In terms of what hasn’t been officially announced, but could still be in development, Robbie Barsamian, a boss at Horror Inc., recently said they are working on a new video game and movie sequel. Perhaps that’s what Scherr is referring to in his comments. In any case, Jason Voorhees appears to have returned, though there’s nothing official in the character’s landscape yet. Weeks ago, the iconic killer returned in a feature short that had all the spirit of a sequel, and at least gave fans an early taste of what the Jason Universe could look like.
