Anyone who grew up in the 1980s remembers gathering around the TV to watch The Disney Sunday Movie. Each week, the anthology series presented a new Disney flick to enjoy, which was usually something the whole family could get into. There was no rhyme or reason to what they showed, as a long-forgotten Halloween favorite aired in April 1986 – seven months before spooky season. Today, the lost classic is available to stream on Disney+, so if you’re looking for a heavy dose of nostalgia this year, you know where to go.
First airing on April 20, 1986. Mr. Boogedy was peak horror for 80s kids who enjoyed being scared, but not terrified. The family classic was directed by Oz Scott and written by Michael Janover, and today it’s remembered fondly for being a cheesy movie that blends humor and horror, creating a film filled with nostalgic Halloween vibes. Some might even call Mr. Boogedy a gateway movie for those looking to be exposed to the genre without getting too freaked out about what it has to offer.
For a small Disney movie, Mr. Boogedy has some pretty awesome names in it. The film stars Richard Masur (The Thing, My Girl), Mimi Kennedy (Midnight in Paris), Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), John Astin (The Addams Family), David Faustino (Married… with Children), Benjamin Gregory (ALF), and Howard Witt (The Golden Girls). Set around Halloween, Mr. Boogedy focuses on a family who moves to the appropriately named town of Lucifer’s Falls only to find themselves terrorized by a 300-year-old ghost. Check out the full synopsis below:
“The Davis family moves into a new house in the town of Lucifer Falls, Massachusetts, only to discover it’s haunted by the mischievous and sinister ghost of Mr. Boogedy, a 300-year-old colonial-era villain. As strange and spooky events begin to unfold, the family—especially the children—must unravel the mystery behind the ghost and find a way to stop him before he causes chaos.”
‘Bride of Boogedy’ Is Also Streaming on Disney+
For those looking for a double dose of nostalgia this Halloween, Bride of Boogedy is also available to stream on Disney+. The longer sequel aired one year after Mr. Boogedy in 1987, and this time added Eugene Levy to the cast for an extra dose of comedy. Like its predecessor, it’s a family-friendly horror movie that sees Levy’s character unleash the titular ghost on the Davis family in order to sabotage their gag shop.
As we head on into October this week, now is the perfect time for all you 80s kids to relive all the fun of Mr. Boogedy and its sequel. You may even want to introduce them to your own children for the very first time to see if they find the movies just as spooky as you did almost 40 years ago. If anything, you’ll have a great time reliving all the timeless jokes in them while at the same time remembering where you were when you first saw Mr. Boogedy’s creepy green glow.
