The Simpsons are returning to the big screen twenty years after their first movie and 38 years after the series debuted. In July 2007, The Simpsons Movie opened as the long-awaited film adaptation of the popular animated series. It was a box office and critical hit, grossing $537 million worldwide and receiving an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Talks of a sequel have been circulating since the first film ended, with Maggie Simpson’s “first words” that the family heard being “sequel?”, although no news has been released on that front in a decade.

Walt Disney Pictures and 20th Century Studios officially confirmed The Simpsons Movie 2 in an official post on Instagram with a teaser poster. The poster sees Homer Simpson’s hands grabbing the classic pink sprinkled donut, casting a shadow creating the numeral two. The tagline reads, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” The film is set to be released in theaters on July 23, 2027. No plot details about the sequel have been confirmed.

‘The Simpsons Movie 2’ Actually Changes the MCU’s Plans

The Simpsons Movie 2 takes the release date previously held by an untitled Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, which has been removed from Disney’s release calendar. This now means there are no planned MCU films to be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, possibly setting up a major cliffhanger that will leave fans waiting a year for resolution. That will also make Secret Wars the only MCU film released in 2027, only the fourth time that the franchise has released just one title, following Iron Man 2 in 2010, The Avengers in 2012, and Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

The Simpsons Movie opened on July 27, 2007, meaning the sequel is now set to open nearly twenty years to the date of the previous installment. The time between the first film and the sequel is actually a bigger gap in time than when The Simpsons first debuted on Fox in 1989 and the release of The Simpsons Movie. That was seen as a rather long wait for the feature-length adaptation, making the sequel’s even bigger gap more shocking. The Simpsons Movie Season 2 will debut between Seasons 38 and 39, marking nearly 40 years on the air.

The Simpsons Movie 2 is unlikely to be the grand epic finale to The Simpsons franchise, as the series has been renewed by Fox through Season 40, albeit with shortened seasons. The Simpsons is a generational franchise, one that has been part of pop culture longer than most people have been alive. The very fact that The Simpsons Movie opened before the birth of the MCU, the release of Avatar, and the rise of now-iconic film franchises like Twilight, The Minions, and more makes the sequel’s existence feel amusing in its own right. In 2002, the episode “Gump Roast” concluded with the song “They’ll Never Stop The Simpsons,” which, among all the predictions made by The Simpsons, was the most accurate.
