Ari Aster’s latest film, Eddington, is finally hitting the HBO Max streaming service, as part of A24’s overall distribution deal with HBO. First released in theaters in July, Eddington was an interesting departure from the director’s previous work, as Aster has been best known for his work in the horror genre on films like Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau is Afraid. While there are certain horror elements to his latest film, Eddington is a Western first, creating an intense environment that is incredibly relevant to today’s sociopolitical climate. Now, more viewers can experience it on streaming when it arrives on HBO Max.
Per an official press release, Eddington will debut on streaming exclusively on HBO Max in the U.S. on Friday, November 14. Moreover, the film will also drop on HBO linear on Saturday, November 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, with Austin Butler and Emma Stone, Eddington tells the story of a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal), with the logline saying that the confrontation “sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.”
Taking place in the year 2020, Eddington thrives on modern day social anxieties and fears, harking back to a time not too long ago when everyone was living in fear, isolation and uncertainty. While the movie is a Western in aesthetic and themes, Aster also uses the panic at the time to create some more tense and frightening moments that are reminiscent of his work in horror. There is also an interesting comedic aspect to Eddington, with the movie taking advantage of the absurdity to provide hilarious commentary on the political spectrum.
‘Eddington’ Joins the Growing Library of A24 films on HBO Max
Eddington joins other A24 films on HBO Max, including recent releases like The Legend of Ochi, Opus, The Brutalist, and many other films. With an all-star ensemble cast and an all too relevant message, Aster’s latest movie is sure to cause a stir when it hits streaming and new viewers who didn’t catch it in theaters get a chance to watch it. The movie has proven to be something of a mixed bag for critics, with the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes giving the film a 69% score based on 275 reviews, with the consensus giving praise towards the cast but saying that the “tonal misdirect” of the film results in an unsatisfying conclusion.
Viewers can decide for themselves if Eddington leaves something to be desired when it hits HBO Max in November, and see how the movie stacks up against Ari Aster’s more terrifying works. For those who don’t have HBO Max, Eddington is also available for VOD and digital purchase, as well as on Blu-ray, with each option of purchase coming with bonus features. Eddington is as modern of a Western as it gets, and should make for a lively and intense watch on the streaming service.
