Following the monstrous success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, the first teaser for the upcoming sequel has now emerged from the depths. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One proved to be not just one of the greatest Godzilla movies ever made, but one of the greatest monster movies, period, with the sequel expected to build on the almost unbelievably solid foundations laid down by its predecessor.

The new teaser, which you can check out below, reveals that the Godzilla Minus One sequel will be titled Godzilla -0.0, aka Godzilla Minus Zero, with the footage being unveiled by the official Toho X/Twitter account. The teaser also confirms that Godzilla Minus Zero will once again be written, directed, and supervised for VFX by Takashi Yamazaki with VFX work by Shirogumi, thus reuniting the creative team that won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

Production on Godzilla Minus Zero will be handled by Toho Studios and Robot, who no doubt hope to find the same success with the sequel that they found with the first critically acclaimed, box office behemoth that was Godzilla Minus One. While no plot details have yet been revealed, the return of the “minus” in the title certainly suggests that the follow-up will continue Takashi Yamazaki’s vision for this latest Godzilla chapter.

Can ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Live Up to the Legacy of Its Predecessor?

Godzilla Minus One was released theatrically in Japan to huge success back in November 2023, with Toho’s American subsidiary, Toho International, releasing the movie in the U.S. in December. The Godzilla outing is the 37th installment in the long-running franchise and finds the iconic beast tormenting post-war Japan. Already devastated by the war, a new crisis emerges in the form of the giant monster. It has not yet been confirmed whether this new Godzilla movie will be a direct sequel or a separate story featuring the kaiju icon.

Starring Ryunosuke Kamiki (Your Name.), Minami Hamabe (Shin Kamen Rider), Yuki Yamada (Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar), Munetaka Aoki (The Roundup: No Way Out), Hidetaka Yoshioka (Dr. Kotō Shinryōjo), Sakura Ando (Monster), and Kuranosuke Sasaki (My Home Hero), Godzilla Minus One was met with critical acclaim, and now stands at 99% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside 98% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. The movie also saw huge success at the box office, grossing over $100 million worldwide and breaking box office records, including achieving the biggest opening weekend ever for a live-action Japanese movie.

While plot details are a secret, returning director Takashi Yamazaki previously revealed that the human drama would take precedent over the monster mayhem, with Kōichi Shikishima and Noriko Ōishi, the couple at the center of the first movie, returning for more…

“I don’t know that anyone has pulled off a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama, and that challenge is something that I’d like to explore. When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it’s very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component.

I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state of peace and calm – but perhaps [it’s the] calm before the storm, and the characters have not yet been forgiven for what has been imposed upon them.”
