Val Kilmer Took Shoes From Bobby Moynihan’s ‘SNL’ Dressing Room

Comedian Bobby Moynihan has recalled a memorable interaction he once had with Val Kilmer, in which the late actor took some footwear from his Saturday Night Live (SNL) dressing room. The shoes were a gift from someone else, but they turned out to be the gift that kept on giving, as Kilmer walked away with an extra pair of kicks. Kilmer was polite enough to ask whether he could have them, even though he had already acquired “a couple” elsewhere — but Moynihan found himself inexplicably giving them to the former Batman star. He recounted the bizarre backstage back-and-forth in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying:

“I was sitting in my dressing room, probably smoking a cigarette – I was a smoker at the time. There’s a knock on my dressing room door, and I didn’t say anything, and it just opened, and it was Val Kilmer. He had two or three boxes of shoes with him. And he said, ‘Hey, man, do you want those shoes?’ What had happened was Usain Bolt was around and had given everybody free shoes. And for some reason, Val Kilmer showed up with a couple pairs in his hand and asked me if I wanted mine. For some reason, I said ‘No,’ and Val took them and left, and I never saw him again. I can’t explain it. I don’t know why he needed so many Usain Bolt shoes. He didn’t know what size they were.”

Kilmer, who died in April at the age of 65 following a battle with pneumonia, famously played Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in 1995’s Batman Forever, but he didn’t return for the sequel Batman & Robin, with George Clooney taking up the mantle in the subsequent film. He may have hung up his cape and cowl far too soon, but it seemed that he was in the market for a collection of shoes. “I’m glad that Val Kilmer got what he needed in that moment,” Moynihan said, fondly remembering the encounter. “It couldn’t have been more perfect.”

Bobby Moynihan Has Joined the Batman Franchise

Moynihan has followed in Kilmer’s footsteps (minus the shoes) and joined the Batman franchise. He voices the character Dr. Kirk Langstrom, aka Man-Bat, in the animated superhero series Bat-Fam, which is set to premiere on Prime Video on Nov. 10, 2025, as a follow-up to the 2023 film Merry Little Batman. The new show features the same core characters as the movie, but it also introduces several new guests and reformed villains to Wayne Manor, unleashing even more chaos and hijinks into the sprawling estate. Showrunner Mike Roth previously expressed his enthusiasm for bringing additional members of the Bat-Fam into the fold:

“I just want to see as much of the Batman universe with this design filter as possible. Going into the new series, we’re starting to explore that territory, and it’s really fun.”

Moynihan, who served as a cast member on SNL from 2008 to 2017, has had an extensive voice acting career up to now, with prominent roles in major animated TV shows and movies, including Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Monsters University, and Inside Out, plus its 2024 sequel. He is joined in the cast of Bat-Fam by Luke Wilson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Yonas Kibreab as Damian Wayne/Little Batman, James Cromwell as Alfred Pennyworth, Haley Tju as Claire Selton, London Hughes as Alicia Pennyworth, Michael Benyaer as Ra’s Al Ghul, among others. There is no doubt that Moynihan will find his feet in the DC universe, and his voice will echo through Wayne Manor’s belfry for a long time to come with a fresh iteration of the iconic character.
