Apple TV’s latest sci-fi offering lives up to the hype, according to critics. Hailing from the creator of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan has returned with a new series on streaming that is being heralded as a “masterpiece.” The Apple drama features Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn, whose character is tasked with saving the world from happiness.
As of this writing, Pluribus has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 28 reviews. Critics have praised the series as an instant classic, living up to the anticipation generated by the cast and crew involved. Collider called it a “sci-fi masterpiece” that is able to be “equal parts unnerving, hilarious, heartbreaking, and always unexpected.” The show, which seems to be inspired by the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been considered by Consequence as “the best pandemic-related art we’ve gotten yet, because it comes at those themes from the most unexpected of angles, prying open the lingering trauma from those years to explore the deeper ways that time hurt us all.”
MovieWeb‘s own review did not shy away from pointing out the show’s massive scale, which is fueled by Apple TV’s ability to generously invest in their high-profile projects. Despite following a small group of people and particularly one character played by Seehorn, Pluribus manages to feel big, from its cinematography to the location scouting. It seems Gilligan has turned things up a notch from his previous TV projects, allowing for a truly “eye-popping” experience on a technical level.
“The most impressive thing about Pluribus is its scale. Shot in widescreen and taking full advantage of a big Apple budget, the series looks and feels astonishingly big. Shot primarily in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico — also the setting for both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul — Gilligan and his team manage to make this new world feel fittingly enormous. Big, often wordless scenes act as demonstrations of just how amazing the show can get on a technical level, and they are all duly eye-popping.”
