Superman breakout character Jimmy Olsen is getting his own DCU series, and it has a great creative team that knows all about developing shows based on investigative journalism. Shortly after the release of Superman, rumors spread that a series centered on Jimmy Olsen, played by Skylar Gisondo, was in development. The Superman Saga is certainly expanding, with Supergirl set for release in June 2026, followed by Man of Tomorrow in July 2027. Now, Superman’s pal is getting a series, one that will delve into the villains of the DCU.

According to Deadline, Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the duo who created the award-winning mockumentary American Vandal for Netflix, have been hired to write, executive produce, and showrun a Jimmy Olsen series, which will be titled DC Crime. James Gunn and Peter Safran are signed on as Executive Producers. The series will center on Olsen and other Daily Planet reporters, besides Clark Kent and Lois Lane, who investigate stories about supervillains.

Alongisde these first details, it has also been revealed that the first season will center on Gorilla Grodd, a common enemy of The Flash who was previously established in the DCU in Creature Commandos, with the gorilla villain standing alongside Princess Ilyana Rostovic in Circe’s vision shown to Amanda Waller.

‘DC Crime’ Could be a Game Changer for the DCU

If Dan Perrault and Tony Tachenda’s work on American Vandal is an indication of what to expect from DC Crime, fans are in for a treat. The two-season Netflix original series was a mockumentary series that parodied true-crime documentaries like Making a Murderer by taking absurd juvenile situations, such as explosive diarrhea, and treating them with the same gravitas and self-seriousness. American Vandal received rave reviews from critics, was nominated for a Prime-Time Emmy, and won a Peabody Award. Bringing that same level of comedy to the DCU is a welcome addition and further fleshes out the interesting slate of projects.

While some fans might have been skeptical of a Jimmy Olsen series, it certainly has some comic precedent. Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen was a spin-off comic centered on the Daily Planet photographer that ran from 1954 to 1973, spanning 163 issues. It was most famous for being the comic in which Jack Kirby introduced many of his New Gods concepts, including the all-powerful DC villain, Darkseid. Even though James Gunn has ruled out Darkseid in the DCU’s near future, DC Studios might be using DC Crime to lay the foundation for supervillains that could appear in future projects.

A Jimmy Olsen series-led DC Crime can also expand on the Daily Planet staff outside of Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen. Characters like Perry White (Wendell Pierce), Cat Grant (Mikaela Hoover), Steve Lombard (Beck Bennett), and Ron Troupe (Christopher McDonald) could get expanded roles in the series. Many fans likely hope to see Sara Sampaio return as Eve Teschmacher, who was last seen telling Jimmy Olsen, they could “be together forever.” As for Grodd, his involvement not only continues the DCU’s building out its rich, fleshed-out world with fantastical talking animals and potentially offers a peek at Gorilla City, but also could lay the groundwork for the DCU version of The Flash.
