Adele, the powerhouse singer known for chart-topping hits such as Hello and Rolling in the Deep, is preparing to swap the stage for the screen, as the Grammy-winning artist has reportedly signed on to make her acting debut in Tom Ford‘s newest film. The fashion designer-turned-filmmaker behind the picture has directed two films to date (2009’s A Single Man and 2016’s Nocturnal Animals) but he is now in pre-production on the Adele-starring feature, which is set to be an adaptation of the 1982 Anne Rice novel, Cry to Heaven.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ford will write, produce, and direct the latest Rice adaptation, which centers around “a Venetian noble and a maestro castrato, with both attempting to succeed in the opera world” during eighteenth-century Italy. Adele’s role in the film is being kept under wraps for now, but given that one of the novel’s central themes is the art of music, she will no doubt find herself right at home in the screen version of the story. The outlet notes that Cry to Heaven is currently in pre-production in London and Rome, with principal photography set to begin in mid-January ahead of an anticipated release in autumn 2026.

Adele previously announced an “incredibly long” break from music following her Las Vegas residency and the conclusion of her European shows in late 2024. She expressed a desire to pursue other creative interests, with Cry to Heaven appearing to be the first of her new ventures. She will be bolstered by an all-star cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schafer, Josephine Thiesen, Thandiwe Newton, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, Hauk Hannenmann, Lux Pascal, and Adolescence breakout Owen Cooper.
