One of the best action movies of the 1990s is making a comeback on streaming. When you think of ’90s action stars, names like Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Keanu Reeves likely come to mind. But, nestled among that prestigious list was another major star of the ’90s action scene. Fans seem to forget that Brendan Fraser was a tour de force of the action genre before the turn of the millennium. However, his best action film, and one of the best action flicks of the ’90s, The Mummy, is currently making a comeback on streaming.

The Mummy is currently streaming on MGM+, and it’s returning from the dead on the streaming charts. At the time of writing, The Mummy is the fourth most popular movie on MGM+. In fact, its sequel, The Mummy Returns, is also blasting its way up the streaming chart, currently sitting in seventh place. The Mummy is one of the most iconic action movies of the ’90s. Brendan Fraser starred as Rick O’Connell, an adventurer hired by Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) to oversee an archeological dig in Hamunaptra. But, unbeknownst to them, a rival team is also searching the same place, and has awoken an ancient and evil curse placed on the dead High Priest Imhotep. The official synopsis reads:

“At an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, an American serving in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy who begins to wreak havoc as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love.”

The Mummy was directed by Stephen Sommers, who co-wrote the script with Lloyd Fonvielle and Kevin Jarre. Alongside Fraser and Weisz, the film also starred John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor, Arnold Vosloo, Jonathan Hyde, and Omid Djalili. The Mummy was a major success in 1999, grossing over $417 million worldwide, against a budget of $80 million. The film also scored decent reviews from critics, earning a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences clearly loved it more, as it holds a 75% user rating on RT. “Stellar action, characters, and CGI effects for ’99, The Mummy is easily one of the best adventure/horror/action films out there,” read one recent user review, while another said, “Old school joyful cinema fun. Guilty Pleasure or not, it’s still a pleasure.”

Those who remember The Mummy as the ’90s action classic that it is were over the moon this month to learn that Brendan Fraser will finally return to the hit franchise for another installment. Following the failure of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy reboot, fans were hoping for one more adventure with Fraser’s Rick O’Connell, and, in November 2025, those hopes and prayers were answered.

17 years after the last installment (2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), The Mummy 4 is finally happening. Both Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return for the new sequel under Universal Pictures. Most interestingly, the new movie will retcon Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, as it will be a direct sequel to The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. No release date has been revealed.
