Wicked: For Good is nearly upon us, and the highly anticipated musical finale has already landed an early verdict from critics. Although the lead performances sign once again, it seems the sequel fails to live up to the quality of the first part, though fans will likely be satisfied with the emotional finale.
As of this writing, Wicked: For Good has a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 70 reviews. It’s a step or two below the first installment, which received an 88% score. The film, which releases later this week on November 21, stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, among others. MovieWeb’s own review by Eric Goldman praised the film’s lead performances, as Erivo and Grande make it “easy to stay invested in the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda,” despite some “eye-rolling moments.” Overall, though, the film feels like it drags the story along a bit, even if it’s actually shorter than the first.
“Wicked: For Good often has a very haphazard feeling to it. Underlining that a film’s length and its pacing are not automatically intertwined, For Good drags far more than the first movie at times, despite being about a half hour shorter.”
Other critic reviews arrived at a similar, if not more positive, conclusion. When it comes to the songs, Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com believes that they “may not be as catchy this time around, but ‘Wicked: For Good’ really sings where it counts: with the emotional ache of the fractured friendship at the story’s core.” Alongside the For Good‘s poignant moments and emotional performances, Variety felt like the sequel was able to improve on the original material by “giving the pair more scenes (and songs) together in this final stretch, which now feels like a robust tale unto itself.”
