'House of the Dragon' Renewed for Season 4 by HBO Actorsvaultpro

HBO is going all in on House of the Dragon as they not only renewed the series for Season 4 but also gave fans a hint of when Season 3 will air. A prequel set 200 years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows the decline of House Targaryen, a war of succession known as the “Dance of the Dragons”. The series stars Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, and Steve Toussaint.

HBO officially confirmed that House of the Dragon has been renewed for Season 4, with the network revealing it will debut in 2028. Meanwhile, House of the Dragon Season 3 will air in Summer 2026, but it does not have a specific date or quarterly window. It is unclear what the episode count for Season 3 and Season 4 will be, as Season 1 ran for ten episodes while Season 2 had eight in total.

A two-year release gap and a summer release are standard for House of the Dragon at this point. House of the Dragon debuted on HBO on August 21, 2022, and quickly became a hit for the streamer, drawing in 9.9 million viewers and seeing an increase in viewership the following week. Season 2 premiered two years later on Jun. 16, 2024, with its season finale airing on August 4. This likely means House of the Dragon Season 4 will air in summer 2028.

HBO has spaced out House of the Dragon seasons every two years, a sharp contrast to Game of Thrones, which, up until its final season, had a new season every year. Yet now, Game of Thrones fans won’t be denied a return to Westeros for as long. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another prequel spin-off series, is set to air in January 2026, with the series’ Season 2 airing in 2027 between House of the Dragons Seasons 3 and 4. HBO’s plan appears to be to have one Game of Thrones-related series every year for the foreseeable future.

In the past, House of the Dragon was said to conclude with Season 4, though the HBO press release notably made no mention of this. It is possible HBO has decided to extend the series, or that they simply forgot to reiterate prior information. If House of the Dragon Season 4 truly is the final season, it will have been an impressive journey for the series. Even though it might have only aired four seasons’ worth of television, it will have been on the air for six years, two years under Game of Thrones. It also gives the creative team plenty of time to plan out the ending and not repeat the same mistakes as Game of Thrones, or anger author George R.R. Martin.
