Ever since it was announced that The Mandalorian & Grogu would be coming to cinemas in 2026, fans of the Star Wars series have been asking one question. Will The Mandalorian return for Season 4? In a new interview with Empire Magazine, series creator Jon Favreau appears to have finally answered the question.

In 2019, the Star Wars franchise had just released The Rise of Skywalker in cinemas when Disney’s new streaming service debuted the first season of the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, to great reviews and record-breaking viewership. Over the following years, two more seasons followed, as well as the divisive spin-off, The Book of Boba Fett. Now, with The Mandalorian heading to the big screen, will we ever see Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin back in a new season of the show? Favreau told Empire:

“We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here. [The story] is structured about a movie structure, as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.”

This may not come as a surprise to many fans, as it was rumored that the fourth season was transferred to the movie that’s now coming out next year. However, some did believe that they would also see a fourth season of the series arrive sometime in the future. That now seems to be out of reach, and it looks like the adventures of the Mandalorian and Grogu will mostly be seen on the big screen going forward.

It is impossible to deny that The Mandalorian gave the Star Wars franchise a breath of fresh air when it debuted in 2019. Since then, however, the expanding TV arm of the franchise, incorporating Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, which will be getting a second season in 2026, and The Acolyte, which won’t, has become a little jaded and been subjected to plenty of criticism on social media and in audience reviews.

Now, the Star Wars franchise is looking to return to the big screen in a big way, with several new movies planned, starting with The Mandalorian & Grogu next year. However, The Mandalorian movie could be the beginning of the end for this part of the Star Wars saga, as following the release of Ahsoka Season 2, the only project currently in development linked to this part of Star Wars is Dave Filoni’s crossover movie that is expected to end the story of the Mandalorian era.

Regardless of whether more projects are added to the Mandalorian era of Star Wars, there are many other movies already being worked on, including Sean Levi’s Starfighter, which will arrive in cinemas in 2027. Other movies from the likes of James Mangold, Patti Jenkins and Simon Kinberg, seem to be in a constant state of flux from one month to the next, while a proposed trilogy from Rian Johnson is now believed to be out of the picture entirely. One thing everyone can rest assured of knowing is that Disney is not about to let its cash cow lay down and die, and there will always be a new Star Wars project just over the two-sunned horizon.
