If you’re a horror fan, and you’re planning a trip to Tinseltown soon, you might want to wait until 2026. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, located in Los Angeles, is set to open a new and exciting exhibition honoring the horror genre and the influential legacy it has built since the first scary movies were unleashed. It’s not yet clear exactly how large this exhibition will be, but considering it has its own name, you should plan to spend an entire afternoon at the Los Angeles venue specifically designed for movie lovers.
As reported by Fangoria, the name of the exhibit is “The Horror Show,” and it’s being described as a “bold and immersive exhibition” based on one of the most popular and successful genres in entertainment. It will run from September 20, 2026, to July 25, 2027. It hasn’t been revealed how exactly attendees will “interact” with the exhibit, but according to the press release, they will immerse themselves in their favorite horror movies:
“Blurring the line between museum presentation and eerie spectacle, ‘The Horror Show’ takes visitors on a journey through cinema, starting with an introduction gallery sound installation, into ‘The Hallway’ —modeled after the common horror trope — that leads to six distinctly themed galleries: Gothic, Psychological, Science, Slasher, Religion, and Ghosts. Each gallery is distinctly designed to invite visitors into iconic settings where they will encounter their favorite creatures, monsters, and objects.”
Which Movies Will The Horror Show Include?
Academy Museum Director and President Amy Homma added: “‘The Horror Show’ recognizes horror as one of the most emotionally resonant and innovative types of filmmaking, and celebrates its radical creativity and artists […] I am excited for visitors to explore and experience filmmaking that has influenced generations.” Jessica Niebel, the person responsible for curating the exhibits, also expressed her excitement:
“Throughout film history, horror has thrilled and moved audiences, acting as a powerful outlet for expression and a tool for social commentary […] Through these stories, people have found catharsis and community among fellow horror fans around the world. I can’t wait for everyone—from horror enthusiasts to the horror-curious — to see ‘The Horror Show.'”
Naturally, fans will be wondering which horror features are set to be honored at “The Horror Show.” Well, you can expect to see an iconic group of classic horror outings at the museum, which already features horror goods such as a prop shark from Jaws, an Oscar for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and even the original typewriter used by Joseph Stefano to write Psycho, among many others. However, the new addition to the museum won’t be just a prop display. It’ll be an immersive experience that will allow horror fans to actually interact with their favorite movies.
The beloved horror movies to be featured in the experience include: Alien (1979), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Black Swan (2010), Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Get Out (2017), Halloween (1978), Ju-On (1998), Midsommar (2019), Misery (1990), Poltergeist (1982), Ringu (1998), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Exorcist (1973), The Shining (1980), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and more. A list which promises that “The Horror Show” will be an unmissable experience for horror fans.
