As Alan Ritchson continues to expand his action filmography, he is switching it up alongside a comedy star in an explosive new film from Amazon MGM Studios. With several projects on the way from major studios, Ritchson has been increasing his output after breaking records on the Prime Video thriller series. This time, fans of the actor will get to see him as an action hero once again, but in a very unconventional role.
Entertainment Weekly has debuted several images from Playdate, an upcoming action comedy that is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 12. The film stars Ritchson (Reacher) and Kevin James (Grown Ups, The King of Queens) as two stay-at-home dads who join forces for some risky (and explosive) business as they face a dangerous conspiracy. The duo will be joined by Sarah Chalke, Alan Tudyk, Stephen Root, Isla Fisher, Benjamin Pajak, and Banks Pierce. You can check out the first-look images below.
Playdate was directed by Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door), based on a screenplay written by Neil Goldman (Family Guy, Community). Greenfield spoke to EW about wanting to show Ritchson’s comedic side, saying, “everyone knows Alan as the badass who kicks ass, but I wanted to flip that on its head and show the world how truly hilarious he is.” It’s safe to say that fans of Ritchson since his Blue Mountain State days will be very happy. Read the plot description previously provided by Deadline:
“The film follows a down-on-his luck man, Brian (James), who was just fired from his job and becomes an unexpected stay-at-home dad to his 10-year-old son. On his first day, he accepts a playdate invitation from Jeff (Ritchson), another stay-at-home dad, who turns out to be an unexpected loose cannon. The two fathers and their sons spend the day on the run, facing a deadly conspiracy.”
