With his dominating performance as the fearless Jack Reacher in Prime Video’s Reacher, Alan Ritchson has finally emerged as one of Hollywood’s most charismatic leading men after years in the industry. The action crime series debuted in 2022 and instantly became a streaming knockout, garnering rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. It has since spawned three thrilling seasons (and counting) and a highly anticipated spinoff. Now, Ritchson is looking to further establish himself as the face of the streaming giant with his upcoming film Playdate.

Ritchson is set to headline the action comedy alongside a stacked cast including Kevin James, Sarah Chalke, and Alan Tudyk. The film focuses on two fathers who agree to have a play date between their sons, only to find their breezy afternoon turned upside down when a group of dangerous mercenaries targets them. Thanks to the actor’s charming presence and undeniable appeal, Playdate is shaping up to be yet another slam dunk for Ritchson and will give his devoted fans something to enjoy while they anxiously await another season of Reacher.

Director Luke Greenfield (The Animal, Let’s Be Cops) has tapped an eclectic cast to star in his action comedy Playdate, the latest Prime Video original set to dominate the streaming platform this November. The King of Queens alum Kevin James appears as Brian Jennings, a recently fired accountant. After losing his job, he decides to take advantage of his personal setback and become a stay-at-home dad to his new stepson, Lucas (Benjamin Pajak), making it his mission to connect with the boy. When he meets the affable Jeff Eamon (Ritchson), Brian agrees to set up a playdate between their kids.

It doesn’t take long until Brian makes the shocking discovery that both Jeff and his “son” C.J. (Banks Pierce) aren’t exactly who they claim to be. The laid-back get-together quickly turns chaotic when a group of bloodthirsty mercenaries pursues them. Brian learns that Jeff is actually a secret agent who is tasked with keeping C.J. safe from dangerous threats. Their afternoon descends into utter chaos as the bullets start flying, and explosive car chases break out. With enemies piling up around them, Brian and Jeff must join forces to fight back and keep the boys protected.

Ritchson became a household name for his portrayal of the tough-as-nails former military man Jack Reacher in the hit crime thriller. However, the actor had previously showcased his funny side in the criminally underrated show Blue Mountain State, as well as in sitcoms like New Girl, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Workaholics. He’s looking to further showcase his range and universal appeal with the action comedy Playdate, which was penned by Neil Goldman (Family Guy, Scrubs). The screenplay was swiftly pitched to Ritchson, with director Luke Greenfield telling ScreenRant:

“When I got this script for Playdate, I immediately sent it to him, as we were dying to work together. I immediately sent it to him, and I said, ‘This could bring you back into comedy, dude. This could bring you back to the Blue Mountain State [era].’ A little more grounded of a character, and he was in right away. So, we were off and running.”

For his part, Ritchson was attracted to the script’s “surprising amount of heart” and the “wild contrast between suburban dad life and this total explosion of chaos and action”, telling Entertainment Weekly that he and his co-star James “balanced each other really well” while adding: “He played up the fish-out-of-water thing brilliantly, and I got to lean into this borderline-unhinged dad mode.”

Playdate is just one of the latest projects to feature Ritchson letting loose and having fun on screen, as he previously starred alongside Henry Cavill in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and will appear opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming Christmas comedy The Man with the Bag. Greenfield told EW of the Ritchson/James pairing:

“Everyone knows Alan as the badass who kicks ass, but I wanted to flip that on its head and show the world how truly hilarious he is. We all know Kevin’s a master of comedy, but even he’s doing something a little different here.”

Playdate is poised to become a runaway hit, thanks to Ritchson’s commanding presence and his delightful chemistry with James. The action comedy will likely go toe-to-toe with Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming Apple TV sequel, The Family Plan 2, which is scheduled to premiere a week after Playdate. Both movies feature epic combat sequences, playful performances, and a winning blend of humor and heart, setting up a streaming showdown. Playdate arrives on Prime Video on November 12, 2025.
