All good things must come to an end, and after reigning supreme in popularity for the past little while over on IMDb, Alien: Earth and Dexter: Resurrection have finally been dethroned by the hit Netflix series, Wednesday. Part 2 of Season 2 of Jenna Ortega’s supernatural mystery debuted on Sept. 3, and not only does it now sit as the most popular series on IMDb, but it’s also #1 on the Netflix charts worldwide.
Dexter: Resurrection recently took the crown from Alien: Earth, but it appears there’s no stopping the Gothic queen from lording over her television kingdom. Wednesday rose two spots to overtake both, bumping Dexter down to #2 and Alien: Earth down to #3. It’s no surprise, really, as even though Dexter was the talk of the town thanks to its phenomenal season finale last week, the buzz has since fizzled away. Meanwhile, Alien: Earth has struggled somewhat with faithful fans of the franchise, as is evident by its IMDb rating. Yes, it sits at a healthy 7.6, but Dexter holds a 9.2, and Wednesday an 8.0, so compared to those, it’s still lacking with viewers.
What is surprising is the viewership numbers for Wednesday Season 2. Part 1 started off strong with 50 million viewers in its first five days, signifying a triumphant return for the Netflix hit that first debuted in 2022. Fans were eager to see what new trouble Wednesday Addams and company would get up to at Nevermore Academy, and it showed. However, once the second half came along a month later, not everyone was still as invested as they were at the beginning, especially after a lot of fans thought the series did Lady Gaga dirty. In the first five days, Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 earned just 28.2 million views, which is a sharp decline of 43.6%. One can’t help but wonder if the series would have fared a little better had it just released all eight episodes at once, rather than splitting them in two.
All Three TV Shows Have Stiff Competition Thanks to Peacock’s Hit New Comedy
While Wednesday, Dexter: Resurrection, and Alien: Earth are enjoying their time in the sun, a relative newcomer is quickly bringing up the rear, as Peacock’s The Paper has shot up 63 points to become the fourth most popular series on IMDb. The spinoff to The Office dropped all 10 episodes of its freshman season on Sept 4, and has slowly been finding its audience. Rated 7.0 on IMDb, the series holds a Certified Fresh score of 85% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, a 75% score from fans, and is currently the #1 show on the streaming service.
Will The Paper eventually rise even higher to become the most popular TV series on IMDb? It’s possible. Alien: Earth concludes its first season run on Sept. 23, so if it can maintain momentum it definitely has a chance, considering by that point the hype surrounding Wednesday will most likely have died off, and Dexter: Resurrection will be firmly in the rearview mirror.
You can catch Wednesday streaming now on Netflix, Dexter: Resurrection on Paramount+ with Showtime, Alien: Earth on Hulu, and The Paper on Peacock.
