Ana de Armas certainly thrilled fans earlier this year in the John Wick spin-off, Ballerina, but three years ago we saw a very different side of the actress in an R-rated erotic thriller that’s worth a second look on streaming. The best part of all is that it’s directed by Adrian Lyne, who is the same person responsible for such hits as 9 ½ Weeks, Flashdance, Fatal Attraction, and Indecent Proposal. That makes it almost a guarantee that Armas’ film will satisfy those looking for something a little spicier.

Titled Deep Water, the 2022 movie is based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, who also wrote other great mysteries like The Talented Mr. Ripley and Strangers on a Train. Armas stars in the erotic psychological thriller alongside Ben Affleck. The film was supposed to receive a theatrical release, but ultimately wound up heading straight to Hulu after several delays thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s remained there ever since, so for those looking to stream Deep Water, you know where to go to check it out.

Like many of Lyne’s movies before it, Deep Water focuses on a married couple whose relationship is in turmoil. They have an open marriage, which causes jealousy and strife between the two. The chemistry between Affleck and Armas is off the charts, which comes as no surprise when you remember that they were a real-life couple at the time Deep Water was filmed. It’s a great throwback to the erotic psychological thrillers of the past that’s made all the more tense by the manipulative push and pull between the two characters. Check out the synopsis for Deep Water below:

“Based on the celebrated novel by famed mystery writer Patricia Highsmith, Deep Water takes us inside the marriage of picture-perfect Vic (Affleck) and Melinda (Armas) Van Allen to discover the dangerous mind games they play and what happens to the people that get caught up in them.”

Though Deep Water has only a 35% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 25% from fans, that’s not to say it isn’t worth your time. The film as a whole might feel a bit clunky and – at times – cliché, but her performance is second to none here. Her provocative portrayal of Melinda is equal parts sympathetic and malicious, and helps make Deep Water an intriguing thriller that holds your attention for a couple of hours.

In addition to Deep Water on Hulu, Armas can also be seen in Ballerina, which is currently streaming on Starz, and the Ron Howard film, Eden. The latter is a historical survival thriller which also stars Sydney Sweeney, and was unfortunately a box office dud when it hit theaters earlier this year. It’s not yet available to stream on any platform, but it is being offered as a digital rental or purchase on all VOD platforms. Sadly, her supernatural thriller with Tom Cruise has been put on hold indefinitely, so there’s no telling if that will ever see the light of the day.
