When you think of Ridley Scott and war films, your mind likely jumps to the epic Roman combat of Gladiator or the Crusades in Kingdom of Heaven. But, as well as transporting audiences back to ancient wars, Ridley Scott also brought the Iraq War to life on the big screen in one of the best and most realistic modern war movies ever made. 23 years ago, Ridley Scott released one of the best war movies to date, Black Hawk Down, and it’s about to stream for free.
Back Hawk Down is now streaming for free on Tubi. The seminal Iraq War movie was added to Tubi’s free streaming library on November 1. Ridley Scott released Black Hawk Down in 2001 to tremendous acclaim. The film holds a great 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a much stronger audience score of 88%. The Academy also recognized Black Hawk Down, as the film earned two Oscars in 2002, alongside nominations for Best Director for Ridley Scott and Best Cinematography for Slawomir Idziak.
Black Hawk Down is based on the best-selling non-fiction book of the same name by Mark Bowden, which outlined the Battle of Mogadishu between the United States and the forces of the Somali faction leader, Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The film features an absolutely stacked cast. Josh Hartnett leads as Eversmann, alongside the likes of Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy, Tom Sizemore, Orlando Bloom, Jason Isaacs, Ty Burrell, William Fichtner, Sam Shepard, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Ewan Bremner, Ioan Gruffudd, and Kim Coates. The official synopsis reads:
“In 1993, the U.S. sends special forces into Somalia to destabilize the government and bring food and humanitarian aid to the starving population. Using Black Hawk helicopters to lower the soldiers onto the ground, an unexpected attack by Somalian forces brings two of the helicopters down immediately. From there, the U.S. soldiers must struggle to regain their balance while enduring heavy gunfire.”
‘Black Hawk Down’ Is Still a Renowned War Movie
24 years after it was released, and despite being overshadowed by Scott’s more popular movies, Black Hawk Down is still a beloved war movie. The film garnered some criticism upon its release, as some considered it to be propaganda for the US military. That sentiment has since spread to almost every war movie, with 2025’s Warfare sparking a debate about the ethics of war movies as entertainment.
However, it appears that sentiment has since died down, and many now view Black Hawk Down as the spotlight on the reality and horror of war that it was intended to be. “Wow, what an ensemble of talent delivering an outstanding performance not only on the horrors of modern conflict, and its relentless nature, but, its emotional turbulence and catastrophic effects on the minds and souls of these young soldiers,” wrote one user on Rotten Tomatoes, who gave the film a five-star rating. Another viewer agreed, writing:
““Black Hawk Down” delivers phenomenal acting and tells a gripping story with brutal realism that makes it difficult to watch at times—but that raw honesty is what makes the film so powerful. Its unflinching portrayal of war captures both the chaos and the brotherhood found within it. Overall, it stands as a favorite and a true masterpiece.”
