One of the most exciting announcements in recent memory is the news that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would both be returning for another entry in The Mummy franchise. The idea of a fourth entry has long been something that fans of the franchise have wanted. There have been attempts to make different Mummy movies, such as Tom Cruise’s failed 2017 iteration that was meant to be the start of a “Dark Universe” franchise. Following the announcement, Fraser has now broken silence on the upcoming movie, giving fans a small tease of what to expect.

In an interview with AP News to promote his upcoming film Rental Family, Fraser talked about his newfound relevance and struggles in the Hollywood film industry. Among the talking points was the fourth Mummy film, coming 17 years after the franchise ended. For the Oscar-winning actor, this upcoming project was the Mummy film he had always wanted to make. Fraser would describe the process of making the third film, and how it led to him longing to tell a fourth story that he never got to (until now):

“The one I wanted to make was never made. The third one was a model of … how can I say this to the AP reporter? NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and we went to China. Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience. I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”

While the original Mummy film, released in 1999, would receive mixed to positive reviews upon its initial release, it was a box office success. Moreover, the film would go on to become a cult classic in recent years, as the movie would gain an incredibly loyal fan base, and even spawn entire conventions centered around the trilogy. The subsequent films, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, would end up receiving more negative reviews, though that hasn’t dwindled the popularity of the series or Fraser’s portrayal of the main character, adventurer and explorer Rick O’Connell.

Fraser’s passion for the upcoming project, and the involvement of his co-star Weisz, should be enough to get fans of the franchise excited. Moreover, those unfamiliar with the 1999 film could be introduced to it leading up to the release of the fourth movie, reigniting the popularity of the series as a whole. Hopefully, the upcoming movie will follow in the trend of the original film, blending unique horror with the action adventure genre, and let Fraser close the book on one of the characters he is most well known for.
