Channing Tatum has been waiting his whole life to play Gambit, and according to him, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg: “You’re gonna get to see a whole different [Gambit] and a whole lot more”

While promoting his upcoming film Roofman, Tatum explained how his beloved Cajun accent from his brief appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine is being taken to a whole new level in Avengers: Doomsday.

“I know the Cajun accent. I don’t have anyone in my family that’s Cajun, but it’s a very specific dialect, and to do it in a way that people all over the world would understand him is hard, you know, because there’s a wide spectrum of Cajun. And no one can write for a Cajun also, because they’re not Cajun, so you’re kind of just writing what needs to be said, and then I kind of go and have to translate it with my dialect coach, who actually is Cajun. It’s such a wild process.”

Tatum’s accent took the internet by storm in 2024, with memes and virality aplenty. He left audiences wanting more of his Remy LeBeau, and it looks like that’s exactly what we’ll get.

The Channing Tatum and Gambit Connection Runs Deep

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Tatum grew up in Pascagoula, Mississippi, adding, “I lived, literally, in the swamp.” His father is from New Orleans, and despite the family uprooting and moving around the south a few times, Gambit stayed with Tatum forever:

“I was the kid in the front den, like throwing cards at my friends. We would watch the [X-Men] cartoons. There were no comic book stores near us at all, so I’d watch the cartoon, and [Gambit] was always just my favorite. I always loved him because he felt like the most real person. He liked women, he smoked, he drank. He was not exactly a hero, but he had a heart that wouldn’t let him be a villain, and he had swag.”

When the X-Men movies started being released, Tatum daydreamed of how the character would appear. Then he started acting, and then, after a long wait, the dream became a reality:

“I can’t describe to you standing on the Deadpool & Wolverine set for the very first time. Even though I had visited the set before and seen Ryan [Reynolds] and Hugh [Jackman] in their costumes, it wasn’t until I was in the costume and in the scene. It didn’t hit me until we all walked out. I would look over and I truly got goose bumps. I was just like, ‘This is happening.’ I feel like it was ‘make-a-wish.’ Sort of like, Ryan [Reynolds] ‘make-a-wish’ sort of thing for me.”

Audiences will see all Tatum’s Gambit has to offer in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.
