Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall, The Godfather and many more movies over a five-decade career, has died at the age of 79 in California. The details of the cause of death were not immediately disclosed by her family.
Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, the actress used her mother’s maiden name when making her first appearances on stage, with her debut being as an understudy in Hair. She broke through on Broadway with Play It Again, Sam, and very quickly found herself shifting into movies, with some of her biggest roles coming in her first years. She played Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather films, the title role in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, which earned her the 1977 Academy Award for Best Actress. In the 1990s and 2000s, she built up a reputation as an actress who could be relied on to bring something special to a movie. She proved this in movies such as Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give.
