‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’
Streaming on October 3
With spooky season fully upon us, what better way to embrace the Halloween spirit than by revisiting the criminally underrated ’80s gem Something Wicked This Way Comes, a dark fantasy that helps bring the classic Ray Bradbury novel to life in spine-tingling fashion. Set in Green Town, Illinois, the adaptation centers on best friends Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade as they try to protect the townsfolk from the ominous Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce) and his Pandemonium Carnival after they mysteriously arrive and grant the residents their greatest desires… for a price.
Ray Bradbury collaborated with director Jack Clayton on the screenplay for the Hollywood adaptation. However, creative differences plagued production, and an additional $4 million was spent on reshoots and edits, which toned down some of the novel’s more menacing elements. Nonetheless, Something Wicked This Way Comes features a sinister storyline and antagonist, spellbinding magic, and a small-town Americana feel, and is more than worthy of a second look, 40 years after its initial premiere. You can revisit the dark fantasy starting October 3.
‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ (Season 2)
Streaming on October 8
In 2024, Disney granted the wish of longtime fans when they announced that a sequel to the popular fantasy series Wizards of Waverly Place was in the works, with the first season of the spinoff Wizards Beyond Waverly Place debuting just in time for Halloween. Set 15 years after the events of its predecessor, the comedy centers on eldest sibling Justin Russo (David Henrie) as he attempts to live out a normal life with his wife and two sons, Roman and Milo, only to revive his magical skills to help guide a young wizard-in-training named Billie.
The trailer for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place amassed a whopping 69 million viewers within just 10 days, setting a Disney Channel record and becoming its most-watched trailer for a comedy series. The second season follows Justin as he sets out to help train the now magically inclined Roman, Milo, and Billie for the upcoming Family Wizard Competition. However, the Russos also find themselves facing a new, mysterious threat that could spell major trouble for the clan. Audiences will also be happy to know that Selena Gomez is set to reprise her role as Alex Russo in the spellbinding season, which will be available for streaming on October 8.
‘Halloween Baking Championship’
Streaming on October 11
Halloween lovers and foodies are in for quite the tasty treat as the popular reality competition series Halloween Baking Championship will be making its way to Disney+ in October, with the Food Network hit once again back to crown the greatest baker of spooky desserts. In the entertaining original, a group of talented bakers participate in sinister challenges, where they must create creepy, crawly confections and showcase their skills in hopes of winning a $25,000 prize and the title of Halloween Baking Champion.
Three installments of the fan-favorite program will be making their way to the platform, with comedian John Henson serving as host alongside a stellar panel of judges, including chefs Carla Hall, Zac Young, and Stephanie Boswell. The seasonal program first captivated audiences when it premiered in October 2015, featuring contestants tackling fun challenges involving themes such as monsters, demented clowns, haunted houses, and mad scientists. Episodes of Halloween Baking Championship will be available to stream on October 11.
