The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the MCU in general, has just suffered another big setback on the franchise’s long path to recovery. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently available to purchase on PVOD (and will soon be streaming on Disney+). But the film might not be as popular on digital as Marvel Studios and Disney were hoping. The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened in theaters this July to a decent critical reception and good, but not overwhelmingly great, box office figures. As the MCU now bounces in and out of public attention thanks to some lackluster recent movies, it appears as though more fans are waiting for The Fantastic Four: First Steps to stream on Disney+, rather than paying for the movie. That reluctance is even more evident on the digital streaming charts.
When The Fantastic Four: First Steps was released on PVOD and Digital, it shot straight to the top of the major streaming charts. iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play listed The Fantastic Four: First Steps as the bestseller in the weeks following its digital release. But the MCU’s biggest movie of the year has now been dethroned on all three platforms. Zach Cregger’s Weapons holds the pole position on iTunes and Amazon, with A Minecraft Movie making an unexpected comeback on the Google Play Store. However, The Fantastic Four: First Steps hasn’t just been relegated to second; it’s much worse than that.
On iTunes, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is fourth on the digital streaming chart. Below Weapons sits Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale in second and F1 in third. On Amazon, several films sit above First Steps, including Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, Jurassic World Rebirth, Materialists, and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. Of course, The Fantastic Four: First Steps hasn’t been a financial failure — it grossed $518 million worldwide — but it is far from the $1 billion-plus blockbuster hit that Marvel Studios is used to.
The Fantastic Four Will Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
When the credits rolled on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, everyone was desperate to know when Marvel’s First Family would return to the big screen. After all, we’ve waited years for the characters to finally join the MCU. Thankfully, we don’t have long to wait at all, as Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will all reprise their roles in Avengers: Doomsday.
Production recently wrapped on the MCU’s next tentpole movie, and it is currently slated to release in December 2026. But, before that, fans have one more standalone film to enjoy before the Secret Wars saga brings the MCU Multiverse to a close. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently slated to release in July 2026, with Tom Holland reprising his role for a fourth standalone movie. Of course, Spider-Man will also be returning for Avengers: Doomsday, alongside 21 other established MCU heroes.
