While fans wait for House of the Dragon Season 3, another Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has received an unexpected release update. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series of books set within the Game of Thrones universe. Set 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, but after House of the Dragon, A Knight of Seven Kingdoms is the latest attempt by HBO to continue their long-running franchise and flesh out the universe.
Casey Bloys, HBO’s chairman and CEO, spoke with Variety following the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. When asked about the premiere date for A Knight of Seven Kingdoms, Bloys responded with “I’m going to say January. How about that?” It is unclear if this is direct confirmation that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut in January or if he is just teasing fans. It will mark 17 months since the previous Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, concluded its second season.
Kicking Off HBO’s 2026 Slate of Programming
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuting in January would be a first for the Game of Thrones franchise. With the exception of Season 7, Game of Thrones typically debuted in April and would run into May, partially so it could meet the Emmy submission deadline. HBO has now used this window for some of its biggest series, as The Last of Us Season 2 debuted on April 13, 2025. Part of the reason A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might not debut in April is that HBO may have that release window saved for another series.
Euprohira Season 3 has been confirmed to return in the spring, and the long-awaited season of the critically acclaimed series would be the ideal series for HBO to place in that April release window. There is also Lanterns, the upcoming DCU Green Lantern series that James Gunn has confirmed will debut before the release of Supergirl. If Lanterns debuts in April, it could be finished by May, one month before Supergirl opens. However, now with Euphoria possibly aiming for that April, Lanterns could debut in early March. That means it could begin right as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms concludes its first season, possibly in February if the January premiere date holds.
Meanwhile, House of the Dragon has typically been a summer series, with Season 1 premiering in August 2022 while Season 2 debuted on June 16, 2024. House of the Dragon Season 3 is expected to air in the summer of 2026, meaning that Game of Thrones fans might get two Westeros series in the same year. With House of the Dragon looking to conclude with Season 4, it appears that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be HBO’s big attempt to keep the franchise going as they continue to develop more spin-offs.
