The Most Unique Horror Movie of the Last Decade Sets Digital Release Date Actorsvaultpro

After an already incredibly successful run at the box office, Shudder’s big horror hit, Good Boy, has now received a Digital streaming release date. After premiering at the 2025 South by Southwest film festival, the movie was distributed by IFC and Shudder in the United States. Told entirely from the perspective of a dog, the unique premise of Good Boy would prove resonant with audiences, making $7 million at the box office off of a $750,000 budget. Not only would Good Boy make back its budget several times over, it also became Shudder’s second-highest grossing movie, only behind Late Night with the Devil.

For those who didn’t get to catch Good Boy in theaters, the movie is now available for VOD purchase, only just releasing on October 23 at 9:00 PM. The movie has a price tag of $19.99, though it will eventually be available on streaming at a later date on the Shudder streaming service as well as AMC+, both of which are subscriptions that can be added to an Amazon Prime Video account as well. Directed by Ben Leonberg (in his feature directorial debut), Good Boy stars Indy the dog as the titular character, a loyal dog who goes with his owner to the secluded countryside, where trouble awaits the man and his dog.

It’s in this quiet and ominous area that Indy the dog sees dark and mysterious forces that put his human in danger, forcing the animal to try and protect his best friend no matter the cost. It’s a dark story that takes a step back from the traditional narrative of a horror movie, choosing to have a main character that perceives the world completely differently than any normal protagonist would. The result is an exciting, frightening, and tragic movie that shows the lengths that man’s best friend would go to protect the person they love.

‘Good Boy’ is an Exciting and Different Kind of Horror Movie

With an 89% “Fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, Good Boy has proven itself as a successful horror movie both critically and financially. The marketing for the movie has also done a tremendous job, with Shudder’s first trailer inciting an online discussion about the collective fear that viewers had for the fate of the dog. The viral trailer and adorable lead was a winning combination for Good Boy, a success that will likely translate over to the digital and streaming landscape, especially since the movie can be bought before the Halloween season ends.

Hopefully, Good Boy’s impressive financial performance and popularity will pave the way for more stories told from unconventional perspectives. With a limited budget but an ambitious idea, Leonberg took the constraints of independent features and created a memorable horror film that centers on a new kind of protagonist that practically everyone would want to root for to survive until the end. Moreover, Leonnberg could also be encouraged to experiment even further with his sophomore feature, creating another movie that plays with perspective and tells the story through a different lens than what is usually expected.
