Constantine is a DC Comics character who has had an interesting history of live-action adaptations. After the 2005 live-action film starring Keanu Reeves, Matt Ryan would take on the role of the character in a short-lived television series in 2014, and later come back as the character in CW series like Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Still, director Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film remains culturally relevant thanks to its cult classic status and the popularity of Reeves, so much so that a long-gestating sequel is closer than ever to getting made. Now, Co-Chairman of DC Studios James Gunn has provided a brief update on the status of the long-awaited film.

In a recent interview with BobaTalks, Gunn was asked about the status of the Constantine sequel, which Reeves and Lawrence have both commented publicly on this year. As cryptic as ever, Gunn revealed that while there have been talks, the Co-Chairman hasn’t seen anything concrete with regard to a screenplay, saying:

“I’ve discussed it on and off. I discussed it with Keanu [Reeves[, So, it’s…I think that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot. I think they’re talented, but I have not read any script yet.”

One of the things that Gunn has been most vocal about since taking over DC Studios with his producing partner Peter Safran was the need for scripts before a project is officially green-lit for production. Many of the problems that plagued the previous regime at Warner Bros. and DC were due to the fact that projects were put into development without any completed script, leading to an inconsistent and messy cinematic universe. So, it makes sense that Gunn is apprehensive to say anything is concrete, and instead praises the talent of those involved who want to bring the movie to life.

An “Elseworlds” ‘Constantine’ Sequel Feels More Likely Than Ever

Lawrence told Collider early in 2025 that the team behind the film were “closer than ever” to bringing a sequel to life, also stating that there was a “great idea” that they had as to what direction they wanted to go in. Interestingly, while promoting Good Fortune, Reeves said that he received a new draft of the script and that it was set to be given to the studio. So, the fact that Gunn hasn’t seen a script yet means that Reeves may not yet have had a chance to meet with Gunn.

It’s also worth noting that a Constantine sequel is still possible under the new DC Studios regime, with Gunn and Safran receptive to stories that they will dub “Elseworlds.” Taken from the name of DC Comics labels, Elseworlds represents stories like The Batman Part II, which features familiar DC characters but are set outside the new continuity that started with Superman. Should a script find its way to Gunn, and provided it has a story is worth telling, it’s more likely than ever for Reeves’ Constantine to get another chance on the big screen. Given his newfound popularity thanks to the John Wick franchise and Lawrence’s recent success with The Long Walk, now is as good of a time as any for the creative duo to reunite for another dark comic book movie.
