A supernatural Western horror released just last month has already landed on streaming. And while you may not have heard of the movie, you are sure to take notice when you learn that horror icon Stephen King not only gave the Western outing his approval, he hailed it as an “authentic shocker.”
Featuring an all-star cast that includes Guy Pearce(Memento, The Brutalist), DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World: Dominion), Raoul Trujillo (Riddick), Jamie Neumann (The Deuce), Jack Alcott (Dexter: New Blood), Joanna Cassidy (Blade Runner), Emily Ford (Outer Range), and Bill Pullman (Independence Day, The Sinner), the Western thriller in question is Killing Faith, which eagerly mashes together various genres to tell the tale of a mother who believes her daughter is possessed.
Written and directed by Ned Crowley, Killing Faith is now available to rent on several popular platforms, including Prime Video and Plex, and can also be streamed on
Apple TV. You can check out the official synopsis for Killing Faith below…
Set against the plague-ravaged deserts of the 1849 Arizona territory, Killing Faith journeys through an American West consumed by sickness, violence, and whispers of something darker. Starring Guy Pearce, DeWanda Wise, and Bill Pullman in a haunting exploration of belief and fear–and the lengths one will go to protect a child the world believes is cursed.
‘Killing Faith’ Boasts a Score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes
Released in the United States in October, Killing Faith was met with praise from various critics, ultimately landing a promising score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Among those who found a lot to love in the Western horror was horror author Stephen King, who took to X/Twitter to say…
“KILLING FAITH: A quasi-supernatural Western that has echoes of Cormac McCarthy. The first scene, involving a child and a horse, is an authentic shocker.”
Several critics awarded Killing Faith near-perfect ratings, with Clint Worthington of RogerEbert.com concluding, “Minor sins are easy to forgive for such a bold, idiosyncratic anti-Western as this, the kind we don’t often get.” A 4/5 was given to the movie by Phil Hoad of The Guardian, who praised Killing Faith for having such a “distinctive silhouette,” while another 4/5 came courtesy of film-authority.com’s Eddie Harrison, who called the movie “a Gothic Western camp-fire tale illuminated with sudden, surprising busts of violent action, Killing Faith is a well-constructed and engagingly-played movie with plenty of star-power to offer…worth seeking out in a S. Craig Zahler meets True Grit vibe.”
Finally, Thom Ernst of Original Cin awarded Killing Faith an A-, declaring it “one weird western,” before adding, “Is it worth seeing? Absolutely. Because sometimes it’s the films that bewilder us that leave the deepest marks: hoofprints on wet grass, difficult to follow but impossible to forget.”
While Killing Faith faltered at the box office, perhaps its streaming release will allow the Western to follow in the footsteps of other genre mash-ups destined for cult classic status.
