After plenty of speculation, it has been confirmed that Kurt Russell will be facing off against Godzilla and Kong in the second season of Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. In a new short video teasing Season 2 – and potentially a first teaser coming this week – Russell appeared on set, saying, “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”

Kurt Russell and his son, Wyatt Russell, shared the role of army officer Lee Shaw in the series, with Kurt playing the elder version of the character who had been lost in time as part of one of Season 1’s twists in the multi-layered story. The Season 1 finale saw Lee being stranded in the Hollow Earth after he helped the crew of the Monarch ship escape back to the outside world – a return that revealed them to have arrived on Skull Island with a very familiar giant ape.

The new season will bring fans back to the world of kaijus with 10 new episodes coming soon. Along with Russell, the new season will also star Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett and Anders Holm. You can see the video shared by Apple TV below.

In an interview with Collider back in May, Wyatt Russell revealed that Season 2 will have plenty more mysteries to uncover, and he will be returning – presumably in flashbacks – as the younger version of Lee Shaw to face more monsters and unveil new revelations about the characters fans are investing in. He teased at the time:

“Season 2 of Monarch was really interesting to be able to get to do because we had to expand on certain themes and stuff that we found in the first season to really work. I haven’t been briefed on what I can tease and what I can’t. I can say that the mystery deepens. There are more monsters that arrive that are really fun to explore in the story. We wanted to level it up, I guess you could say, and in the Monarch way, ratchet up the stakes of the relationships as well. I can tease that the relationships really get ratcheted up.”

The MonsterVerse Is Going from Strength to Strength

While just over a decade ago, the idea of Hollywood being able to create their own multi-project universe built on the Godzilla and King Kong franchises seemed like the least likely thing to ever happen. Then Gareth Edwards brought a reasonable Godzilla movie to screens in 2014, and the rest is history.

After the huge success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in 2024, the wheels for the next collaboration between the legendary movie monsters did not take long to start turning. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will see Grant Sputore take over from Adam Wingard as director for this third crossover movie, and will star Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Stevens, Jack O’Connell, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill, with Stevens reprising his popular role as Trapper Beasley from the previous film.

The new movie will be released in March 2027, presumably around a year after Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 arrives on Apple TV.
