Despite its fantasy setting, Miles Teller was moved by the sweet simplicity of the love story in his new romantic comedy. Eternity follows Larry (Teller), a man who fights to win his wife Joan’s (Elizabeth Olsen) heart all over again in the afterlife as she wrestles with the decision of whether to continue to be with her husband after their deaths — or to choose her first love (Callum Turner), who has waited 67 years to be reunited with her.
While attending Eternity‘s Q&A session at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 7, Teller mused (per People), “I love an ordinary love, you know?” The Top Gun: Maverick star — who has been married to Keleigh Sperry since 2019 — suggested this may have come from the fact that he grew up around the type of men who were fully “devoted” to their wives and focused on doing everything they could to make them happy.
“I just thought this [film] was a beautiful way to take a peek behind the curtain of people that you just passed in the grocery store, people that kind of stuck it out. And it just affected me greatly, honestly, when I read the script.” – Miles Teller
Modern-day romantic comedies are filled with friend group love triangles, coffee shop meet-cutes, and workplace enemies-to-lover dynamics, but Eternity puts a fantasy twist on the genre and adds an extra emotional gut punch by asking the question: When your life is over and you think all of your romantic decisions have already been made, who would you choose to spend your afterlife with?
In the film, Joan is given only one week to decide between her two husbands of the past — a choice that Olsen claimed very much “overwhelmed” her character during the TIFF Q&A on Sunday. While it was a difficult situation to imagine being in as an actor, the Wandavision alum quipped, “I just tried to do what was on the page as best as I could!”
After wading through the confusing and complex emotions involved in telling the bittersweet love story, Olsen revealed to Extra in February that she thought it would be a really “special” flick and that she was “really proud of” it in the end.
Eternity was directed by David Freyne, written by Pat Cunnane, and produced and distributed by A24. It hits theaters on Nov. 26.
