The second season of Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece might be several months away, but that hasn’t slowed down the promotion of the series. With new posters teasing the story arcs to come and images of exciting new locales and characters. Now, another new video has been released to tease the first arc of Season 2, and it features the introduction of Captain Smoker, a Navy officer who develops a rivalry with Monkey D. Luffy. Callum Kerr was cast as Smoker back in June 2024, and while there have been plenty of promotional images featuring the actor, this is the first clip that shows him in action.
In the new video (which can be viewed below), Smoker is seen using his devil fruit powers to fuel his motorcycle, which can be piloted on the water. Much like many of the new characters introduced this season, Captain Smoker is a devil fruit user, with his granting him the ability to turn into smoke, while still keeping other parts of his body solid. The clip also shows Smoker ordering other Navy Officers, showcasing the character’s stoic and serious nature, which is meant to be a sharp contrast to Iñaki Godoy’s Luffy.
This scene is more than likely in one of the first episodes of the season, as the Loguetown arc is what immediately follows where season 1 ended back in 2023. The port town is the last stop on the East Blue before Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat crew can enter the Grand Line, which is where the titular One Piece is located. While Smoker is based in Loguetown, his inevitable interaction with Luffy will set the character on a new course that will undoubtedly unfold across the next two seasons.
Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Season 2 Is Bringing Smoker’s Unique Powers to Live-Action
Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece has done a great job of balancing the fantastical source material with the restrictions of bringing the story into the live-action television medium. With impressive visual effects and larger-than-life production design, combining Smoker’s powers and unorthodox vehicle for one cool character entrance. Moreover, Kerr’s brief line of dialogue in this new clip is evocative of the no-nonsense nature of Smoker in the manga. All that remains to be seen is if the character’s powers are properly translated into live-action when he goes up against Luffy in Loguetown.
While One Piece Season 2 currently has a premiere date of March 10, the recently announced third season does not currently have a release window. Both of the upcoming seasons will adapt the next big saga from Eiichiro Oda’s manga of the same name, and given the massive scale of the story being told, it’s unsurprising that it is going to take two seasons. Hopefully, the quality of the show won’t dwindle between seasons, and will allow supporting characters like Smoker to come into their own as more of Oda’s massive manga is adapted into live action. For those who want more One Piece, the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, and the manga is releasing new chapters weekly every Sunday on the Shōnen Jump website.
