Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning are partnering up for Discretion, an upcoming legal thriller series from A24. This marks a fourth collaboration for the two actresses, who previously worked together on the films The Beguiled and How to Talk to Girls at Parties, and have an upcoming Apple TV+ series, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, in the works. Discretion is based on a yet-to-be-published short story by Chandler Baker, a New York Times bestselling author known for her popular novels like Whisper Network and The Husbands.

A24 acquired the rights to the short story, and Baker will adapt the story for the screen herself. Plot details remain scarce, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that the story is set in Dallas and is based on Baker’s own experiences as a corporate attorney.

Beyond Discretion, several of Baker’s other works are being adapted for the screen. Her novel The Husbands is being adapted for Amazon MGM, with Kristen Wiig set to star and produce. Baker’s latest novel, Cutting Teeth, is also in development for a television adaptation. Additionally, her short story Oh. What. Fun. has been made into a Christmas comedy film for Amazon starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Longoria.

‘Discretion’ Is Another Highly Anticipated Project for Elle Fanning & Nicole Kidman

Hulu, 2023

Discretion will be added to the list of anticipated projects for both Kidman and Fanning. Kidman is reprising her role as Gillian Owens in the sequel Practical Magic 2 (which recently wrapped production and is scheduled for a 2026 premiere). She will return for the anticipated third season of Big Little Lies and will star alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in Scarpetta, which is based on the book series by Patricia Cornwell.

Fanning, on her end, is set to appear in the new Predator movie titled Badlands and will portray Effie Trinket in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. She and her sister Dakota Fanning are set to star in and produce a film adaptation of the novel The Nightingale. Fanning will also star alongside Sarah Paulson in I Am Sybil.

Given the successful and acclaimed careers of both Kidman and Fanning, news of this most recent collaboration is a win for fans of legal thrillers. Kidman is an award-winning actress with an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmys, and six Golden Globes. Fanning has earned a National Board of Review Award and nominations for an Emmy and multiple Golden Globes for her acclaimed performance in The Great. While their alien rom-com How to Talk to Girls at Parties received mixed reviews, their work in Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled was critically acclaimed. The film, which won Coppola the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, was also praised for its strong performances.

Kidman and Fanning will not only star in the series but will also serve as executive producers alongside Baker, Dakota Fanning, Brittany Kahan Ward of Lewellen Pictures, Kidman’s partner Per Saari for Blossom Films, Erin Brockovich scribe Susannah Grant, Jordan Cerf, and Joe Hipps under his Cut To banner at A24. The studio will soon begin to shop the series.
