After almost a decade, The Four Horsemen have finally returned to once again dazzle audiences with their magic-infused heist shenanigans. But does the long-awaited sequel, quite rightly titled Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, dazzle as much as audiences had hoped? Well, the Rotten Tomatoes score has now been revealed, so let’s peek behind the curtain and find out…
Now You See Me: Now You Don’t has now debuted to a “fresh,” but somewhat middling, 60% on the review aggregator site, based on 50 reviews. While this may initially strike you as a little disappointing, considering the lengthy wait for the follow-up, this does mean that Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is considered better than either of its predecessors, where critics are concerned.
The first outing, released back in 2013, holds a “rotten” score of 51%, while the 2016 sequel, Now You See Me 2, fared far worse with just 34%. So, while 60% may feel like an anticlimax, it does suggest that Now You See Me: Now You Don’t was indeed worth the wait. Turning to the reviews themselves, MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman was not a fan, calling Now You See Me: Now You Don’t “a Bloated Bait-and-Switch.”
Classic characters return with a trio of new faces, a lackluster antagonist and a convoluted plot that’s always in motion. The nifty heist at its core plays second fiddle to a stream of introductions and team-building exercises meant to promote cast chemistry. This chirpy repartee almost drowns out the blockbuster illusions and sleight-of-hand chicanery that’s the real draw. Franchise diehards will appreciate seeing the gang back together again, but there’s frankly too much going on to enchant casual viewers.
‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ Has Been Declared “Entertaining” but “Exhausting”
Gregory Nussen of ScreenRant felt similarly, awarding the heist movie just 4/10 and saying, “Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson et al return to join Dominic Sessa and others in a convoluted trick of hollow nostalgia.” Taking a more positive perspective is Collider’s Jeff Ewing, who concluded, “It’s a fun outing that breathes fresh life into the fun franchise, but its sleight of hand is too quick for the magic to develop.”
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, found Now You See Me: Now You Don’t “entertaining” but “exhausting,” while Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praised the sequel for doing “it all in good fun. Which is all this movie is or needs to be.” However, the follow-up also has its share of particularly brutal reviews, with The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager finishing things up with, “Its most impressive feat, however, is finding a way to somehow be even duller than its predecessors.”
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland), Now You See Me: Now You Don’t stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, Ariana Greenblatt, with Rosamund Pike, and Morgan Freeman, and you can check out the official synopsis below:
