While Liam Neeson continues to hold the titles for both “Best Aged Action Hero” and “Best Action Hero Parent,” the former may be about to change hands as a new action thriller, one with an added air of eerie mystery, sets its streaming debut. After Neeson kicked open the door, the aged action hero-led thriller has become a subgenre all its own, with this effort from earlier this year landing a near-perfect score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and offers something different as it demonstrates its own particular set of skills.
Titled The Old Woman with the Knife, the South Korean action thriller follows a legendary aging assassin who, after taking on an apprentice and finding a newfound love for her violent career, suddenly becomes the target. When will these clandestine organizations and rival killers ever learn to leave these legendary assassins alone? Directed by Min Kyu-dong and based on the novel of the same name by Gu Byeong-mo, The Old Woman with the Knife stars Lee Hye-young as Hornclaw, the 60-year-old assassin at the center of the story, alongside Kim Sung-cheol, Yeon Woo-jin, and Kim Mu-yeol.
It has now been revealed (via Well Go USA) that those who either missed or never got the opportunity to bask in the spooky action thrills of The Old Woman with the Knife will finally get the chance to make up for it soon, as the movie is due to land on Digital streaming, Blu-ray and DVD on November 25, 2025. ‘The Old Woman with the Knife’ Offers a Twist on the Aged Action Hero Trope
Critics raved about The Old Woman with the Knife, with Jasneet Singh of Collider calling the movie “Far more thoughtful and provocative than your average action-adventure, The Old Woman With the Knife is a thrilling update to the genre, leaving us with a hole in our hearts as the credits roll.” Echoing these sentiments, Katie Smith-Wong of Flick Feast awarded the action thriller a near-perfect 4/5, saying, “A compelling, bloody and intense thriller that shows heroines come in all ages with Lee Hye-young shining as a badass.”
While MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman took issue with the finale, he heaped praise on Lee Hye-young and Kim Sung-cheol as “the mysterious protagonist and her equally enigmatic adversary are magnetic,” declaring The Old Woman with the Knife “a captivating, spectacularly convoluted thriller” full of “twists and turns.”
