Ricky Gervais may not have been presenting the Emmy Awards, but he did have some of his usual snark to offer those who used the awards ceremony on Sunday as a platform to share their political opinions. However, despite Gervais’ initial reaction and post-sharing on social media in the wake of the event, he subsequently removed several of his posts, seemingly finally discovering the art of self-censorship.
This year’s Emmy Awards included several moments when political statements could not be suppressed by the stars on stage, with Robert DeNiro causing an eruption of applause for his two-word statement about the president, and Hacks star and award winner Hannah Einbinder ending her acceptance speech saying F-ck ICE, free Palestine.” In response to this latter speech, Gervais did not launch into his own rant, but simply wrote, “They’re still not listening.” He shared a link to his blistering Golden Globes warning to winners, when he said, “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything.”
Einbinder’s remarks obviously became the subject of debate on Monday, with the Department of Homeland Security condemning the actress’ statement. In the middle of the ensuing arguments, Gervais retweeted a post in which someone shared another of his 2020 Golden Globes monologue statements, which read, “If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you?” However, by Tuesday morning, Gervais had thought better and removed his re-tweet. Perhaps there are some moments even too controversial for even the comedian to stand by.
Things Must Be Bad if Ricky Gervais Is Censoring Himself
Ricky Gervais has made a career from pushing boundaries, both on social media and on stage. From his coarse and occasionally controversial sitcoms such as Derek and After Life, to his increasingly controversial stand-up performances that often involve jokes that are seen to be offensive by some, Gervais has very rarely been seen to hold back in any matter.
This was particularly true of his several times as the host of the Golden Globe Awards. His opening monologs were a blistering, targeted annihilation of celebrity and the Hollywood machine, which visibly made some of those present clutch their pearls while laughing all the while. Naturally, there were some who did not get the joke, those who called Gervais self-indulgent and even grotesque in his brutality.
It seems that this year’s Emmy Awards saw Gervais’ immediate reaction in his usual unyielding style, but on reflection, saw him rethink some of his reposts. While it is unlikely that this will be a common occurrence, it once again highlights the intense scrutiny everyone is put under for their comments and reactions on social media, even those who are top of the list when it comes to speaking thoughts out loud that many others feel it necessary to keep in their heads.
