What Is ‘Robin Hood’ About, and Who Stars in It?

The legendary outlaw of Sherwood Forest is back and ready to embark upon another thrilling adventure in the MGM+ original series Robin Hood, which features newcomer Jack Patten as the heroic bandit Robin “Rob” Hood. He, along with his band of Merry Men, fights for freedom against oppressive forces. Hollywood veteran Sean Bean stars as Rob’s tyrannical, tax-loving archenemy, the Sheriff of Nottingham, whose overwhelming greed and quick temper make him an immediate adversary of the iconic figure. Bean has appeared in a slew of hit TV shows and films throughout his enduring career, including Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Time.

Determined to bring peace to England following the Norman invasion, Rob is assisted in his epic quest by Marian (Lauren McQueen). The sharp, highly courageous young woman infiltrates the Norman courts to combat royal corruption and fight on Rob’s behalf. McQueen had previously appeared in shows like Hollyoaks and Masters of the Air, as well as in Robert Zemeckis’ Here. Supporting cast members include Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Marcus Fraser as Rob’s trusted sidekick Little John, and Lydia Peckham as Priscilla of Nottingham. The official logline for Robin Hood reads:

“A Saxon forester’s son, Rob, and the daughter of a Norman lord, Marian, work together to fight for justice and freedom following the Norman invasion of England in the Middle Ages. Rob becomes the leader of a band of rebel outlaws while Marian infiltrates the Norman courts, as they collaborate to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to England.”

Showrunner John Glenn co-wrote the screenplay for Robin Hood alongside fellow episode director Jonathan English, having worked on scripts for movies like Eagle Eye and The Lazarus Project, and having produced and written for shows including SEAL Team and Hatfields & McCoys. English also has extensive experience in both TV and film, with credits including The Librarians: The Next Chapter and The Outpost.

Joining the duo as an executive producer is Todd Lieberman, who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on The Fighter and has also produced Warm Bodies and Beauty and the Beast. Promising to bring a “modern energy” and depict the blossoming love story between Rob and Marian in a show billed as a “sweeping, romantic adventure,” Robin Hood is looking to tell an authentic yet refreshing retelling of the classic tale, with the head of MGM+, Michael Wright, calling the series “the epitome of our brand promise” before further saying:

“This is a new imagining of the classic tale of the roguish outlaw hero who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. It’s an exciting, smart, sweeping, romantic adventure that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian to the beloved story.”
