Back in 2022, a new action icon was born of blood and gold in the acclaimed World War II action thriller, Sisu. Now, he’s back, and director Jalmari Helander reveals exclusively to MovieWeb if, following this year’s even better-received sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, there will be to come from Jorma Tommila’s unstoppable commando, aka “the man who refuses to die.”
Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb’s own Joe Deckelmeier, director Jalmari Helander, who helmed both Sisu and its follow-up, discussed the ending of Road to Revenge, which is described as feeling like both “an ending and a rebirth.” While Helander keeps things pretty close to the chest, he admits that, despite Road to Revenge having what he calls the “perfect ending,” trouble could find the aged action hero once again.
“I don’t know yet. For me, it feels like a perfect ending also. Like, maybe Aatomi may have found something that whatever piece or purpose he could have anymore, maybe that’s their thing, but I don’t know, maybe trouble finds him again.”
Will the Ending of ‘Road to Revenge’ Affect ‘Sisu 3’?
The first Sisu introduces us to Jorma Tommila as Aatami Korp, a former Finnish commando-turned-prospector who finds himself being hunted by, and subsequently hunting, Nazis after they steal his gold. Heaped with praise and landing a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, this year’s Sisu: Road to Revenge is written and directed by Jalmari Helander and picks up directly following the first outing. The follow-up finds Aatami embarking on a dangerous mission of revenge when the Red Army commander who killed his family (Stephen Lang) resurfaces, launching them both on a relentless, eye-popping cross-country chase.
For those who have yet to see Sisu: Road to Revenge, be warned, as there are minor SPOILERS to follow. During their discussion, Jalmari Helander was asked to expand on the sequel’s ending, which sees the main character “tearing down his home and rebuilding it elsewhere.” To the filmmaker, this image meant “everything,” with what he had in mind changing the game and elevating the action movie to a “different level.”
“Well, it meant everything for me. When I had the idea for the last scene, it really changed the game for me because I knew that it would elevate the film to a different level, and that’s something I’m most proud of the film also.”
So, while he has no concrete plans for Sisu 3, this year’s Sisu: Road to Revenge has already found success both at the box office and with critics, as reflected in its hugely impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Surely, it’s only a matter of time until the John Wick-meets-Rambo action hero returns for more. After all, come a possible third outing, Jalmari Helander will have had more experience with Sylvester Stallone’s action movie icon than ever before. Here’s hoping, after that, it’ll be time to bring his own action hero back for another brutal and bloody adventure.
