The trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, has finally been released. Based on the 2022 psychological thriller of the same name by Freida McFadden, The Housekeeper follows a young woman named Milly (Sweeney) who is hired by a rich family as a live-in maid, only to discover the family and their home are hiding some dark secrets. However, Milly also has secrets of her own. The movie is directed by A Simple Favor‘s Paul Feig and co-stars Brendan Sklenar (It Ends with Us), Michele Morrone (Another Simple Favor), and Elizabeth Perkins (The Flinstones).

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for The Housemaid ahead of the film’s December 19, 2025, release date. Originally slated for a Christmas release, The Housemaid was moved up one week and will be released the same day as Avatar: Fire and Ash. The trailer for The Housemaid is set to a slow-down version of Sabrina Carpenter’s hit “Please Please Please” and showcases some dark visuals, in what looks like director Paul Feig’s bloodiest film yet. ‘The Housemaid’ Will Conclude Sydney Sweeney’s Rocky 2025

The Housemaid looks very similar to A Simple Favor, another adaptation of a popular book whose trailers sold a lurid mystery about a young woman drawn into the orbit of a wealthy couple with dark secrets. A Simple Favor skewed more towards dark comedy, while The Housemaid is opting for more psychological horror and bloodshed. It certainly makes the December release date an interesting choice, but it appears Lionsgate is maybe banking on the movie to have a hold into January as word of mouth builds.

That certainly worked for Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone but You, as it opened to $6.3 million and fourth place in its opening weekend of December 22, 2023, but held on in the early months of January, becoming a sleeper hit and grossing $88.3 million domestically and $220.3 million worldwide. Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor was also a box office hit, bringing in $97 million back in 2018. Adapting a popular book that became a sensation on TikTok also worked out well for It Ends with Us financially, pulling in $351 million worldwide. All that should bode well for The Housemaid.

However, Sydney Sweeney’s latest batch of films has had a difficult time at the box office and with critics, in what has been a rather rocky road for the young actress. The Ron Howard-directed Eden only grossed $1 million in theaters just a few weeks ago. Echo Valley got a limited theatrical release before debuting on Apple TV+ and received mixed reviews from critics. Christy, which many saw as Sweeney’s big Oscar play, opens one month prior to The Housemaid and has received mixed reviews from critics after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Combine that with the social media controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad, what seemed like Sweeney’s big breakout year has turned into a storm of media headlines. Regardless, if The Housemaid can be a hit, it will certainly end the year for her on a high note.
