As The Conjuring: Last Rites continues to dominate the box office after a record-smashing debut last weekend, it’s been revealed that it won’t be the last time audiences will visit the horror franchise. Despite the film being marketed as the final chapter, a new era for The Conjuring is upon us, but it won’t be on the big screen.
Variety reports that HBO Max has hired Nancy Won (Sunny) to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on The Conjuring series. WandaVision scribes Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires also form part of the writing team. The show has been in the works since 2023, but updates on its development have been silent until now. It seems the streamer is working quickly to get it off the ground, as Last Rites proved audiences are still interested in the horror universe. As of this writing, there is no timeline for when fans can expect the series to debut, but updates should now flow steadier with a showrunner officially at the helm.
The report did not provide any plot details, but The Conjuring series is set to continue the story in some fashion. There is a chance that it could be a prequel, focusing on other cases investigated by the Warrens, or a direct follow-up that takes place after Last Rites. No matter the case, HBO Max has secured an exciting creative team to usher in a new chapter in the franchise. Won’s previous work includes Supernatural, Jericho, and Marvel’s Jessica Jones, while Cameron and Squires have worked on WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
